The psychology department does not take lightly the honors designation
appended to the BA degree. The department chooses to reserve this honor
for those students who have done exceptional academic work. Since the
existing course requirements already include several major writing and
research requirements, students wishing an honors designation will not
be required to do additional work outside of the current course
load. They will however have to show the ability to meet these
existing requirements at a level that clearly shows unusual
excellence. Students receiving the honors designation must
show exceptional achievement in three areas:
Mastery of disciplinary content
Ability to conduct research in the discipline
Ability to present findings in a public forum
The department will recommend any psychology major for the honors designation who meets all of the following requirements:
Is recommended by the Student Life Department as someone who has
taken Goshen College core values and community standards seriously.
Is recommended by the departmental faculty as someone who has
actively shown interest in the discipline of psychology that goes
beyond classroom performance.
Has completed a psychology internship/practicum and received strong affirmation from supervisor.
Has completed a psychological research project requiring the use of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Has a GPA of at least 3.80 in psychology courses.
Has presented a minimum of two different papers at academic
conferences. One of these may be a presentation at the annual on-campus
student forum.
