620.1 Dance Policy

  1. College Sponsored Dances

    1. Application

      Dances may be sponsored by any campus organization or group. Groups or individuals who are not associated with the college may not hold a dance under the sponsorship of the college. A group that is interested in sponsoring a dance shall apply to the Director of Student Activities.

    2. Supervision

      At least one faculty member representing the Student Development Division shall be present at the dance. The sponsoring group shall invite at least two or three additional faculty or staff to attend.,At least one person from *night’ security” shall be assigned by the Physical Plant to assist in supervision of the dance. The duties of this security person include: patrolling the areas outside the building where the dance is being hold, checking the parking lots, and in general checking for any violations of campus standards outside of the building.

    3. Music/Lyrics

      Any music played at the dance shall be in keeping with the spirit of campus standards. The group sponsoring the dance is responsible for selecting music which does not contain lyrics that could be considered offensive. A member of the group sponsoring the dance will be hold responsible to remove any songs that are offensive in language or lyrics. It is the responsibility of the sponsoring group to make sure that the individuals running the sound system and playing the music understand the guidelines and have knowledge of the selected songs for the event.

    4. Participation

      Participation at a college sponsored dance is limited to GC students, faculty, and staff. A non college guest will only be admitted it they are accompanied by their college host. The college host will remain at the dance with their guest. Children of faculty and staff will not be admitted unless they are accompanied by their parents or another college host. It is the responsibility of the sponsoring group to monitor the door and see that all guidelines of the dance policy and the standards in general are upheld by all participants.

  2. Non sponsored dancing on campus

    1. Dancing that takes place on a spontaneous, non planned basis are allowed under the following guidelines:
      1. The person playing the music is aware of the college’s position on music and lyrics.
      2. College standards are upheld.
      3. The noise level is such that other students or off campus neighbors are not disturbed.
      4. When in a dorm or floor lounge, the resident assistant and the resident director are made aware of the dancing.
      5. When with a club or organization, the faculty sponsor is made aware of the dancing.
    2. Any group of students in violation of the above procedures will be held accountable through the residence hall council or a judicial board hearing.
  3. Non Goshen College Sponsored Dances

    Dances sponsored by individuals or group of students in off campus public facilities (FOP, Elks, Shanklin Park Pavilion, ate.)

    1. Non Goshen College sponsored dances may not be publicly advertised on campus.
    2. Any Goshen College persons/groups holding off campus dances will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines. Failure to do so will result in a Judicial Board hearing.
      1. The dance is to be alcohol and tobacco free.
      2. A security officer must be hired by the individual(s) sponsoring the dance. The officer is to see that the dance is alcohol and tobacco free. This includes the parking lot and activities inside the building.
