Display of Other Art on Campus

As a function of the Art Department, the gallery director in consultation with the art faculty is the “clearing house” for art-related decisions on campus. Areas of specific concern are the scheduling and exhibition of works in the Hershberger Gallery in the Music Center, the display area in the snack shop and other temporary art displays on campus.
As a second function of the Art Department, the Art Department Chair in consultation with the art faculty is the “clearing house” for the college’s permanent art collection and its display in public/common areas on campus.

Art Gallery
- Rationale for Art Gallery Program
- To serve as the Visual Arts Forum (equivalent to the stage for drama and music, the playing field for athletics, and the library for academics.
- To provide an easily accessible series of art exhibits in various media to serve students, faculty and community.
- To serve as an educational tool—especially for our art students and for General Education in the Visual Arts
- To provide a showcase for selected student work, senior art exhibitions, and art faculty exhibits.
- Selection Process and Criteria for the Art Gallery
- Exhibits are chosen with input and consultation with the art faculty.
- Attempt is made to correlate with scheduled art classes or special events.
- Attempt is made to vary medium, style, technique, etc., plus consideration of subject matter/content and maintain a balance consistent with the current department philosophy.
- Attempt is made to vary form and content of the exhibits: individual, group, theme, juried exhibits, student and faculty exhibits.
- Generally, exhibiting artists will have an MFA degree or comparable degree/experience as a minimum pre-requisite.
- Artists submit a selection of slides of their current work along with their resume’.
- Artists and the Gallery Director agree to terms of the gallery contract (attachment 1) concerning exhibit dates, publicity, sales and expenses.
- Exhibition suggestions from other faculty or administrators are welcome but the decisions are made by the Gallery Director in consultation with the art faculty with the approval of the department chair.
- Faculty Exhibitions:
a. Full-time faculty are encouraged to provide a one-person show following the sabbatical leave, or the equivalent in research.
b. Adjunct faculty are included in periodic Department Faculty exhibits and media based group shows when appropriate. - GC Alumnae
a. Invite grads who have received MA, MFA or equivalent to exhibit when the work fits above criteria. - Other considerations in selecting artists and/or works for exhibition include:

- aesthetics
- content of work
- ethnic diversity

Display Cases in the Union and Other Temporary Displays of Art on Campus
- Rationale for the Display Cases and Temporary Displays
- It allows space for exhibits of usually short duration.
- It offers timely display of student class projects or other material pertaining to special events (i.e., International student exhibitions, etc.)
- Small exhibits can be accommodated.
- Exhibits are not restricted to “fine arts”; there is more flexibility
- It provides a secure area to display material not appropriate for the gallery.
- Selection Process and Criteria
- The decisions are made by the Gallery Director with approval of the department chair.
- Input from faculty, students, and community are welcome.
- Selection process and criteria may include work/projects by students in any Goshen College Class, and is not necessarily restricted to fined arts.

Campus Visual Arts Permanent Collection and Acquisition
- Rationale for Supervision of the Permanent Collection
- To ensure visual coordination of the art on campus
- To maintain a “visual standard” consistent with the goals of the art department
- The Art Department Chair is the resource and reference person for questions dealing with the addition, disposal and/or relocation of art on campus.
- Areas of Responsibility
- All gallery exhibitions are chosen and scheduled by the Art Gallery Director consultation with art faculty
- Any use of the gallery space between exhibits must be cleared with the Art Gallery Director.
- Use of the lounge must be cleared with the Art Department Secretary (attachment 2)
- Use of the gallery space when an exhibit is installed is prohibited except for special situations: art class/arts class lectures or discussions, visiting student tours, etc. Such events should be cleared with the Gallery Director to avoid conflicts.
