Projects > Project 5
Typically I rate each of the following items on a 1-10 scale, and multiply
by a "weight" (given in parenthesis), and then re-scale.
I do not expect each of you to do every one of these things in your website!
If you scored "10" on everything below,
you'd score a good deal more than 100%! The system is designed
to allow for there being more than one way to do well on this project.
- CSS use (5) : Are you using a site-wide stylesheet? Do your classes
have names that give away their function, like "photobox" rather than "style8"?
Are you setting appropriate default <body> styles?
- Titles / SEO (3) : Does every page have a title? Do the titles start with
something that is unique about that page? Do headlines have words in them
that are descriptive of the content or section of the page?
- Layout (5) : Are you using a stable, cross-browser way of laying
out the different items on your site? Does your layout "break" if someone
increases or decreases the font size?
- External client (4) : A bonus if you worked with a client
who was not yourself.
- Dynamic page technology (5) : A bonus if you used php includes or javascript.
- Information organization (4) : Is information that belongs together
grouped together? Both within a page and across the site: There's probably
some overlap here with "navigation".
- Browser width aware? (3) : Does your site work at typical browser-window
sizes (600 - 1200 pixels wide) or does it behave strangely as browser width
changes?
- Bandwidth (graphics size) (5) : Have you designed your site in such
a way that it works well for people with slow internet connections?
- Contact info (3) : One of the most common tasks that people pursue
on the web is finding an address / e-mail address / phone number for your
organization. (Sometimes a map too). Is that info readily available?
- Navigation (4) : Does it make sense? If someone lands on one of
your sub-pages, is there a path back to the home page somewhere? Is it visually
an appropriate size? The greatest portion of the area of any web page ought
to be devoted to content rather than navigation.
- Prime Screen real-estate (3) :
Are people able to tell right away from the top portion of your page that
shows up initially what it's all about?
- Consistency
(6) : Are you using the same typography, color scheme, and design elements
on each page, so that different pages on your site look like they "belong
together"? (Some elements of this are easy to do if you just use a site-wide
stylesheet).
- Visual design (5) : Do your pages look "pleasing" and have some
visual interest? Are your pages laid out such that the whitespace is haphazard
and distracting or are different items relating to each other visually on
a grid (or some other way).
- Spelling / Grammar / Writing (6)
- Graphic effort (7) : Bonus if your design did something that required
more effort to prepare graphics.
- Copyright (5) : Are there any copyright concerns related to your
site content? Did you credit if appropriate?
- Legibility / Color (2) : Is the content easy or hard to read?
Is color used to help show the organization of your content? Are there too
many competing colors?
- Scannability (4) : Is your content written or visually organized such that
it's easy to scan? Remember Nielsen's results for highlighting key phrases
and using bulleted lists...
- Content (6) : Does your site contain quite a lot
of content? Is the content valuable--that is unique-- or is it the sort of
thing already available on many other websites across the net?
- Photo treatment (3) : Did you treat your photos / images in a distinctive
and consistent way across your site?
