As a Goshen College physics major you will become part of an enthusiastic and supportive group of students and faculty. Physics cannot be learned in isolation. It is not an accumulated set of facts or laws. Physicists work together in modern environments with mathematicians, chemists and biologists. The experience of the Goshen physics major prepares for this.

Our instructional laboratories have twice received National Science Foundation support based on the concepts and ideas of the program. Goshen College’s undergraduate research program has specialty instruments and laboratories appropriate to the research. The facilities for the optical holography work are the result of NSF support since 2000. The biophysics effort is in one of the most critical areas of investigation at this time: synaptic transmission. The X-ray instruments are specially constructed.

Goshen College is the site of an important annual conference on Religion and Science , which provides a platform for exploration of this arena. The leadership for this conference is in the physics department. Speakers have included cosmologists, philosophers and theologians of international reputation.

Graduate Schools

Over 70 percent of Goshen College physics major enter graduate schools. All Goshen physics majors who have chosen to pursue a graduate degree have been admitted to graduate school. Individual professors at research universities have testified to the excellent preparation received at Goshen College. Recent Goshen graduates have chosen schools such as Purdue University, the University of Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of North Carolina, Auburn University, Tulane University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Oregon, Ohio State University, Indiana University, the University of Tennessee, the University of California at San Diego, the University of California at Berkeley, and Princeton University.
