Sport specific rules

Basketball rules

  1. Games will consist of two 20-minute halves with the clock stopping only during the last two minutes of each half and for time-outs. Overtime periods are two minutes each, with the clock stopping at each whistle.
  2. Each team will be allowed two, 30-second time-outs in each half and one in each overtime period.
  3. A technical foul will be called for cussing and excessive aggressive playing. A technical foul will mean that the player must sit out for three minutes, and a second technical is an automatic ejection.
  4. The scorekeeper is the only person allowed to count down the final seconds. Anyone associated with a team that attempts to count the time will be assessed a technical foul.
  5. There is no shot clock used or 10-second rule.
  6. All rules are college men's rules, with the exception of rule #5.
  7. All jump balls are alternating possession.

Indoor soccer rules

  1. Matches shall consist of two 22-minute halves with a running clock - if tied, the last half will be extended (without stopping to restart) for two minutes of sudden death play. If still tied at the end of the extra two minutes, the game ends in a tie. In tournament play, a five-minute sudden death period will be played followed by a shoot-out.
  2. Only two minutes are allowed for half time. Only five minutes between games.
  3. ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR PINNEYS PROVIDED BY INTRAMURALS.
  4. Game is five field players plus one goalie. Free substitution at any time.
  5. All free kicks are direct kicks including the kickoff.
  6. No sliding tackles will be allowed and no tackling from behind.
  7. On all free kicks, the defender must be five yards from the ball.
  8. A ball that hits the ceiling results in a free kick for the other team at the spot that the ball contacts the ceiling.
  9. Balls that go out of play will be put back in play with a kick in, not a throw in.
  10. The end wall is in play up to 10 feet (change in wall color), the curtain is in play up to the change in color.
  11. Corner kicks will be taken from the corner of the basketball court.
  12. Goalies have five seconds to distribute the ball by a throw or by placing the ball on the floor and kicking it.
  13. Free kicks, out-of-bounds and goalie kicks all have five seconds to play the ball.
  14. Field players are not allowed to enter either goalie area--EVEN THEIR OWN DEFENSIVE AREA. The goalkeeper is not allowed to touch the ball in any manner outside of the area.
  15. If offense enters, the goalie is awarded a kick, if defense enters, it is a free kick (15 feet from the goal line).
  16. A PENALTY is a direct free kick from 15 feet from the goal line. However, if in the referees judgment there are repeated violations or the defensive player violates the rule to stop what appears to be a very good scoring chance--THE REFEREE CAN AWARD A PENALTY KICK FROM THE TOP OF THE CIRCLE.
  17. A player receiving a caution (yellow card) must sit out three minutes, but can be replaced on the floor. A second caution in the same game is an ejection.
  18. A player who receives an ejection cannot be replaced and the team must play shorthanded. The player must miss one additional game.
  19. Final standings determined by awarding three points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero points for a loss.
  20. Tiebreaker is in order: head to head game, goal differential, goals scored.
  21. If the ball hits the side of the goal, hits the side of the net, goes behind the goal ¬ the play will stop.
  22. Play will continue with either a corner kick, or a goalie kick.
  23. If a player kicks (passes) the ball back to their own goalie, the goalie may not pick it up with their hands. If a player heads or passes the ball with any other body part except the feet, back to the goalie, he/she may pick up the ball.

Outdoor soccer rules

  • ALL GAMES START AT 4:15 & 5:15
  • PLEASE CHECK YOUR SCHEDULE SO THAT YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR TEAM PLAYS
  • ALL GAMES WILL BE ON THE QUAD IN FRONT OF THE CONNECTOR
  • GAMES WILL BE TWO 25-MINUTE HALVES WITH A FIVE-MINUTE HALF TIME
  • NO OVERTIMES IN REGULAR SEASON
  1. Games will be played with eight on a side, one goal keeper and seven field players.
  2. Free substitution on any end line ball, not on throw-ins.
  3. No offsides will be called.
  4. Sliding tackles will be called very tight. Tackles must be clearly from the side with the foot on the ground in front of the ball. ALL TACKLES FROM BEHIND WILL BE CALLED.
  5. A yellow card will mean a 10-minute suspension for the player. That player can be replaced on the field.
  6. An ejection will mean a suspension for the game in which it occurs and the next game. The team has to play short handed.
  7. If a team has less than eight roster players present, they may "pick up" as many as two students who are not intercollegiate players or who are not on another team. Your team can "pick up" those students for one game only, there is no adding players to your roster.
  8. If you are currently a JV or Varsity soccer player, you may not play intramural soccer.
  9. Forfeits – If the other team does not have a full roster after 10 minutes, they must forfeit. You may play short, BUT ONLY if the other team agrees to this.

Volleyball rules

  1. Normal volleyball rules apply.
  2. Match shall be the best two out or three games rally scoring to 25 points. You must win by two points.
  3. If a team is 10 minutes late to the scheduled match they will automatically forfeit.
  4. Must have no more than three men and three women on the court. If you are short of one sex you can not add or go up to four players in the other sex. You must play shorthanded.
  5. You may pick up one non-roster player to make six. The least you may play with is two men and two women. Report all scores to one of the intramural staff persons working at that time.

  • You may serve from the entire end line
  • You may not block the serve
  • You may not cross the end line on your serve
  • If your serve hits the tape on the top of the net and goes in the other court – it is a good serve
  • You may not lift or carry the ball
  • You may use the “overhead” pass to receive a serve
  • You may not touch the net
  • If the ball touches the line it is in and good
  • You may not interfere with anyone on the other side of the net
  • The ball is in play if hits any part of the body
  • Ball is in play if it hits the ceiling on your side
  • If the ball hits the ceiling and goes over to the other side of the court it is a point for the other team

Captains duties

  1. Act as a team spokesperson on any issues with Intramural Dept. regarding schedule, issues, etc.
  2. Contact team members to remind them of game times, contact team members if they are not present and a "pickup" player is used.
  3. Captains may not rearrange the rosters, you must contact the intramural staff.
