Saturday, May 8, started bright and early with SSTers showing up at Casa de Goshen at 7 AM for our first field trip.  Their promptness was impressive.  (Was it in part the promise of fresh coffee from the Matagalpa region which our guest lecturer, Vincente Padilla, a coffee grower and human rights activist, had brought to town the day before?)

First Impressions

These first days of arrival, orientation, and meeting host families have gone incredibly smoothly.

All of the students, and all of their luggage, have arrived and are safe after a long day of uneventful travel.  Pictures to follow soon!

The sign, directly across the Pan American highway from Casa de Goshen, says it all.  We’ve been settling into Casa de Goshen  and Jinotepe for the past two weeks.  This has included finding our way to the mercado and Supermercado Santiago, learning to use the microbuses and taxis, getting Conrad started at Carazo Christian Academy in  Dolores (a pleasant 20-min walk from the house). With the able assistance of Dalena Taylor Pondler, our local program coordinator, we’re preparing to welcome the students in 12 days.  Host families have been pleased to hear from us, the Spanish professors are prepared to…
