Fall Mainstage: “Urinetown, The Musical”

What if in the near future the world has nearly exhausted the earth’s water supply? What if our 21^st century Goshen, Indiana, lifestyle isn’t as sustainable as we think it is? The Goshen College fall mainstage “Urinetown, The Musical” offers a unique “what if” story.

This musical comedy, with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and a book by Kotis, both makes fun of musical comedy and makes its audience think about “what if.” It will be performed Nov. 9-10 and 16-17 at 8 p.m., and on Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. Professor of Theater Doug Liechty Caskey is the director, Professor of Music Scott Hochstetler is the music director and Assistant Professor of Music Christopher Fashun is the conductor.

“Urinetown is certainly a musical that pokes fun at musicals; in other words, it pokes fun at itself, and that’s part of the entertainment value for the audience,” Caskey said. “It’s theater with a social conscience. At the same time, this production allows us to step out of our own comfort zone by tackling a musical theater show complete with edgy humor, intense choreography, and some first year student performers and designers in the mix.”

From a musical perspective, Hochstetler added, “There is a great deal of musical playfulness; poking fun, and, at the same time, paying homage to a long, rich history of musical theatre.”

The cast includes: Jay Mast, Anna Nafziger, Brett Conrad, Joel Kawira, Lauren Treiber, Emily Grimes, Jacob Greaser, Ben Ganger, Blake Shetler, Rachel Mast, Peter Meyer Reimer, Abby Bush, Stefan Baumgartner, Martin Flowers, Miranda Earnhart, Rhianna Cockrell, Melody Marshall, Sam Carlson, Paul Zehr, Stefan Baumgartner, Hannah Beachy, Christina Hofer, Cara Paden, Adrienne Schmucker, and Paul Zehr.

Umble Center is accessible to wheelchairs and people with other physical limitations. American Sign Language interpretation will be offered during the March 25 performance of the play.

Nov. 2          7:30 p.m., Goshen College Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert, Music Center, Sauder Concert Hall

The GCSO, conducted by Dr. Christopher Fashun, will present their fall concert in Sauder Concert Hall.
The GCSO will be joined by the Goshen College Chorale, directed by Dr. Scott Hochstetler, in a performance of Mozart’s Litaniae Lauretanae K. 109. The program will also feature works by Franz von Suppé, Anatoly Lyandov, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pastoral”).

3          7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Series: Del McCoury Band, Music Center, Sauder Concert Hall

This season, we bring back the much-loved bluegrass of the Del McCoury Band. Since he was last here in 2004, Del McCoury has received a National Heritage Fellowship lifetime achievement award and was elected into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, honoring his 50-plus years making music. Del McCoury and his faithful band demonstrate that bluegrass isn’t just for those with an acquired taste; it’s about presence, passion, and the musical marriage of sound old and new.

7          7:30 p.m., Visiting Artist: Phoenix Park-Kim, Music Center, Rieth Recital Hall

Visiting artist and pianist Phoenix Park-Kim will present a solo piano recital. Park-Kim’s program will include arrangements of J.S. Bach by Wilhelm Kempf and Egon Petri, as well as works by Haydn, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Verdi/Liszt and Frederic Rzewski.

11        4 p.m., CSA Fall Showcase Concert, Music Center, Sauder Concert Hall

Community School of the Arts music ensembles will perform a Showcase Concert in Sauder Concert Hall. The performance will feature the Rejoice Children’s Choir (grades 3-5), directed by Kristin Kauffman, and Shout for Joy (grades 6-8), directed by Sandy Hill. Also performing will be CSA Suzuki String Academy students, directed by Rosalyn Troiano, and CSA piano students, coached by Anna Bauer.

12        8 p.m., The Harbor Trio (Jesse Blumberg, Deborah Selig and Cameron Stowe), Music Center, Sauder Concert Hall

The Harbor Trio, a vocal-piano ensemble based in New York and Boston, will present a visiting artist recital featuring art songs and duets from a wide variety of composers, including Brahms, Clara Schumann, Duparc, Sibelius, Ives, Barber, and Bernstein, as well as modern composers Daron Hagen, Lori Latiman, William Bolcom, and Christina Courtin.
