Date and time: Tuesday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
Location: Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall
Cost: Free and open to the public

Goshen College Professor of History Steve Nolt will present an Afternoon Sabbatical lecture on “The Amish Way: Patient Faith in a Perilous World” on Tuesday, March 12 at 1 p.m. in the Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall. The program is free and open to the public.

Many people recognize the outward expressions of Amish life, such as the buggies and bonnets, but are less familiar with the faith that sustains these practices. Nolt will shed light on the spirituality – the religious heartbeat – of our Amish neighbors, and ask what their religious practices might say to the rest of us.

Nolt was a co-author of a book published by Jossey-Bass by the same title in 2010. It was the first book ever about Amish spirituality and practice, and offered a rare inside look at how Amish Christian beliefs and practices inform every aspect of Amish daily life.

And the Amish population is growing. According to a 2010 report, the number of Amish in North America has doubled since 1991 to 249,500 people. Indiana is home to 43,710 Amish residents. This is due to large families and the fact that nearly 85 percent of children raised in an Amish community choose to join the Amish church as adults.

In addition to teaching history, Nolt is an internationally-recognized expert on the Old Order Amish. He is the author or coauthor of nine other books, including The Amish Way: Patient Faith in a Perilous World (2010), Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy (2007), Mennonites, Amish and the American Civil War (2007) and A History of the Amish (2003).

Celebrate food and family with the authors of the recently released cookbook The Daily Feast (Good Books, 2012) on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at noon during Goshen College’s Afternoon Sabbatical in the College Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall. Registration costs $20 and the deadline is Nov. 3. Call (574) 535-7565 for more information and to register.

Artist and author Esther Rose Graber ’52 will present with four of her daughters – Jane Graber Davis ’76, Ellen Graber Kraybill ’77, Sibyl Graber Gerig ’80, Ann Graber Miller ’80 – all Goshen College graduates and co-authors of the cookbook. Accompanying the words and visuals will be a delectable Caribbean meal taken from the pages of their culinary work.

Esther Rose Graber explained in the book that all seven Graber women love to cook and compiled several photocopied collections of recipes over the years. Based on positive responses from guests and friends and many requests for recipes, the women decided to compile a cookbook with their favorite dishes. Each of the seven authors provided three complete menus — one for a soup meal, the second for a family weeknight supper and the third for a more elaborate guest dinner as well as their favorite special-occasion meals.

In her introduction to the cookbook, Esther Rose wrote that the Graber family’s love of diverse meals was decades in the making. “Our food memories and experiences as a family go back more than 80 years to the days of pap, cambric tea and impossibly hot curries,” she wrote. “Our heritage is rooted in Amish and Mennonite cooking that unites families and friends around the shared pleasures of the table, but our tastes have expanded through a love of travel. That began with Grandpa Joe and Grandma Minnie Graber, who spent many years in India and brought us their love for Indian cuisine, which Grandma prepared with great skill.”

Esther Rose and her husband, Ronald Graber ’52, lived and worked in Puerto Rico for 35 years, so the six Graber children grew up with a love for Caribbean cuisine. The children’s palettes developed further by spending time in Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Cambodia, China, the Dominican Republic, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Indonesia, New Zealand and Mexico.

The book includes many mouth-watering recipes from around the world, practical advice on the best dishes to round out a meal and Graber family stories. “Each meal takes into account the ease of preparation, balance of textures and flavors and eye appeal,” Esther Rose wrote. “Partly because we’re a family of artists — watercolorists, book illustrators, potters, designers, musicians — we know these meals will look as beautiful as they taste.”

The Daily Feast cookbook costs $29.95 and will be available at the luncheon. It is also available at the Goshen College Bookstore and many retail booksellers.
What to do with a $150 million gift? The Elkhart County Community Foundation gladly took on this challenge when a former county resident Dave Gundlach left the foundation this large financial donation after he died last year.

Dr. Peter McCown, president of the Elkhart County Community Foundation, will share the story of Gundlach and the implications of his gift during a Goshen College Afternoon Sabbatical lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. The presentation, titled “Stewardship Matters: The Story of the Elkhart County Community Foundation,” will take place in Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall and is free and open to the public.

Gundlach grew up in Elkhart. As an adult, he pursued life around the world, owning ten multi-million-dollar homes in places like Malibu, Calif., and Europe, said McCown. “Elkhart was still his home town,” said McCown. “When he died, he didn’t have any heirs, so this community became his heir.”

Now that the foundation has $150 million – triple the size of the foundation’s previous overall holdings – McCown said the task is to figure out how to best use the money. “What do you do when you’re given $150 million and the only direction for what to do with the money is to do good?” said McCown. “Do we create more scholarships? Start free preschools? Open new parks, theaters or community centers?” Whatever is decided, the money has the potential to historically transform the county.

The Elkhart County Community Foundation was established in 1989 by a group of community leaders with the goal of creating a community chest of endowments in order to improve the quality of life for citizens of Elkhart County. The foundation provides resources for such community organizations like The Post, Boys and Girls Clubs and the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Fund.

A reception in the Music Center lobby will follow the program. Afternoon Sabbatical programs are usually on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. in Sauder Concert Hall or the College Church Fellowship Hall and are free and open to the public. For more information on the Afternoon Sabbatical series call the Goshen College Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Love coffee? Well, so did J.S. Bach, so much so that he dedicated an entire piece of music to it. Join Community School of the Arts String Director Rosalyn Troiano, along with a “merry band” of musicians, for a performance of “The Coffee Cantata,” by J.S. Bach, during the Afternoon Sabbatical “Goshen’s Coffee Connection.” The performance will be on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. in Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall, and is free and open to the public.

This humorous, coffee-loving cantata (essentially, a mini comedic opera) tells of an addiction to coffee, which was a pressing social problem in 18th century Leipzig, where Bach and his students first premiered the piece in Zimmermann’s Coffeehouse.

“This will be a very unique performance,” said Troiano. “Sauder Concert Hall will have an informal coffeehouse atmosphere for this staged concert. Much like Bach’s original performance with the Collegium Musicum, or music guild, professors, students and area musicians will be combining their musical talent for this delightful piece.”

Before the performance, Troiano will talk about the history of the piece and the relationships between the text and the music. The musicians will play on several period instruments, like the harpsichord, viola de gamba and other replicas of Baroque instruments, borrowed from the collection of Mary Anne Ballard, a local professional musician and member of The Baltimore Consort ensemble.
