Nursing professor wins AARP/AAUW health care scholarship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Goshen College Associate Professor of Nursing Ruth Stoltzfus has won a $500 Health Sciences Scholarship from AARP Indiana and the American Association of University Women (AAUW), South Bend Branch.
Stoltzfus is pursuing a doctoral degree in nursing from the School of Nursing at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. She is a registered nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner.
AARP and AAUW partnered this year to support the continuing education of a woman older than 50 in the health sciences field, which faces a shortage of highly qualified teachers. The joint scholarship expresses AAUW's longstanding support for women's higher education and AARP's commitment to quality, affordable health care for all.
"Well-educated nurses are a necessary foundation for the quality, affordable health care system that Hoosiers want and need," said Carla Hartman, associate state director for advocacy networks at AARP Indiana. "We're proud to support Ruth's educational aspirations, which truly honor our founder's forward-looking vision for all generations."
A joint scholarship selection committee concluded that Stoltzfus' educational goals will help address a documented shortage of Ph.D.-level nursing faculty in Indiana. The committee also anticipates Stoltzfus' continued development as a health care leader in her community.
