Goshen College Lavender Jazz is "Within Reach" for fall concert, Nov. 13

GOSHEN, Ind. – Lavender Jazz, Goshen College's big
band, will present a mixture of jazz standards, world music and
Dixieland jazz in their fall concert, "Within Reach," on
Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Goshen College Music
Center's Sauder Concert Hall.
In his first season as director of the campus jazz band, director
Gregg Thaller will lead Lavender Jazz in performing works by Count
Basie, Miles Davis, Johnny Mercer, John Coltrane, Henry Mancini and
Louis Prima. The band is joined by student vocalist Amy Hansen, and
former director Sonny Carreño will return on drums for one
number.
Thaller is associate professor of music at Goshen College, and
teaches music education and leads both the Orchestra and Lavender
Jazz band. He serves as guest conductor for the Maple City Chamber
Orchestra. Thaller has taught music in public and private high
schools as well as state and private colleges such as Boston
University, University of Cincinnati, Southwest Baptist University,
Evangel University, East Stroudsburg University, McPherson College
and Salem State College, where he served as chairperson of the
music department. His degrees are in performance and music
education from Boston University, the University of Hartford's
Hartt School of Music and the University of Cincinnati's
College-Conservatory of Music. He has undergone additional
orchestral-conducting study at Bard College, University of Iowa,
University of South Carolina, Eastman School of Music and the
Naples Philharmonic in Florida. As a percussionist Thaller is a
member of the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra, and has performed
with groups such as the Springfield (Mo.) Symphony, the Wichita
Grand Opera, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony, the Massachusetts
Wind Orchestra, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the Interlochen Faculty
Brass Ensemble and a faculty jazz trio.
Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and
students. They will be available at the door one hour before the
concert. GC students get in free with ID.
