GOSHEN, Ind. – Lavender Jazz, Goshen College’s big band, will perform its ninth concert in Sauder Concert Hall on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Titled “Sound Bites,” the program will feature jazz standards, Latin, funk, blues and rock classics from the 1930s to the present. The band will perform works by Sammy Nestico, Gene Thorne, Frank Forster, White/Bailey/Dunn, Dominic Spera and others.
Lavender Jazz will also welcome special guests Bruin Jazz from Bethany Christian Schools, directed by Barb Slagel. Bruin Jazz will open the concert and will also join LJ in some joint band performances.
Lavender Jazz’ classy presentation and energetic music – not to mention those purple ties – became an instant crowd-pleaser since its inception in the fall of 2003. The band is directed by Sonny Carreño, in his fifth year of directing Lavender Jazz, who is an adjunct professor in the Goshen College Music Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Texas State University-San Marcos, and taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District and taught English as a Second Language in Texas, Wisconsin and Indiana for 13 years. For nearly 30 years, Carreño has performed as a professional percussionist in a wide variety of styles and venues. Carreño recently joined local Americana group Double Barrel Darrel and has performed with the Anna Montgomery Band and the Tim Hochstetler Trio.
Admission to the concert is $7 general admission, $5 seniors and students. Goshen College students are free. Tickets are available at the door only.
