Duo violin recital to feature Soroka and Gazeau, Nov. 7

GOSHEN, Ind. – Sylvie Gazeau, instructor of violin at the Paris Conservatory of Music, will perform a duo-violin recital with Goshen College Assistant Professor of Music and violinist Solomia Soroka and Associate Professor of Music Matthew Hill on piano at Goshen College on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Rieth Recital Hall.
The program will include works by Louis Spohr, Bela Bartók, Jean-Marie LeClair, Bohuslav Martinů, and Darius Milhaud. Gazeau will also present a master class to collegiate and high school violinists earlier in the day, at 4 p.m., in Rieth Recital Hall.
Gazeau studied at the Conservatoire Nationale of Nice in France. She won the Premier Prix de Violin of the Conservatoire National Superieur du Musique de Paris in 1965 where she studied with Gabriel Bouillon and Joseph Calvet. She followed with a Premier Prix de Musique de Chambre in 1967. In 1967 she won the 2nd Prize in the Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona and then followed with a 2nd Prize at the Carl Flesch Competition in London in 1968. In 1970 she began final studies with Henryk Szeryng and with Josef Gingold at Indiana University, where she became Mr. Gingold’s assistant. In 1979 she was named the Most Outstanding Violinist at the Prix Enesco in France. Ms. Gazeau was a participant of the festivals of Asolo and Naples. She takes part regularly in the Marlboro Festival in the U.S. She has been invited to the Festival International de Sion en Suisse and participates regularly in the academies of Ete de Flaine, Les Arcs, Rambouillet, Perigueux et Portoguaro. She spent many years as the first violinist of the Melos Ensemble of London and the violin soloist of the Ensemble Intercontemporain de Pierre Boulez in Paris. Since 1985 she has served as a member of the violin faculty of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris.
Soroka joined the Goshen College music faculty as assistant professor of music in 2004. She teaches applied violin and viola, chamber music, advanced music theory and music literature classes. Soroka, born in L’viv, is among the most accomplished Ukrainian musicians of her generation. She earned her master’s degree summa cum laude and completed postgraduate studies in the Kyiv Conservatory, and later served on its faculty in the department of chamber music. Soroka also has a doctorate from Eastman School of Music. Soroka made her solo debut at age 10 with the L’viv Philharmonic Orchestra, and subsequently has appeared as soloist with that orchestra on numerous occasions. She has appeared as soloist and as chamber musician at concerts and festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, USA and Canada. Soroka has won top prizes in three prestigious international violin competitions held in the former Soviet Union – the Prokofiev, Lysenko and Zolota Osin’ competitions.
Tickets for the recital are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. GC students receive free admission with ID. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.
