GOSHEN, Ind. – Lavender Jazz, Goshen College’s “big band,” returns to the Sauder Concert Hall stage for a fall concert, “Seeing is Believing,” on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Director Sonny Carreño will use the concert to give attendees a glimpse into the backstage world of Lavender Jazz. A large projection screen on stage will show video clips of the ensemble preparing for the concert and showing what goes on behind the scenes. “I love to watch documentaries for the true stories they tell, the insights they reveal, the knowledge they share and the hidden worlds they uncover,” said Carreño. “Lavender Jazz wants to share our world with you. We want you to see and hear what it’s like to be in the band, lead the band and experience the ‘work in progress’ as well as the end result.”

Lavender Jazz will perform works by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Sammy Nestico, James Pankow and more. The band will also be joined by guest vocalist and Goshen College senior Marianne Stegmann, of Elkhart.

Lavender Jazz’ classy presentation and energetic music – not to mention those purple ties – became an instant crowd-pleaser since its inception in the fall of 2003. Carreño, in his fourth year of directing Lavender Jazz, earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Texas State University-San Marcos, and taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District and taught English as a Second Language in Texas, Wisconsin and Indiana for 13 years. For nearly 30 years, Carreño has performed as a professional percussionist in a wide variety of styles and venues. Carreño recently joined local Americana group Double Barrel Darrel and has performed with the Anna Montgomery Band, the Tim Hochstetler Trio and the opera “Die Fledermaus.”

Admission to the concert is $6 general admission, $4 seniors and students. Goshen College students are free. Tickets are available at the door.
