GOSHEN, Ind. – Lavender Jazz, Goshen College’s Big Band, will present their fall concert “Face the Glory!” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Sauder Concert Hall at the Goshen College Music Center. Guest trumpeter Danny Barber will join Lavender Jazz, as well as Goshen High School’s Crimson Jazz I and Crimson Jazz II. This marks the first Crimson Jazz concert appearance on the Goshen College campus and represents the second time the jazz ensembles from Goshen College and Goshen High School have performed together.

The concert will include a diverse program of Big Band Jazz repertoire including works from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Gordon Goodwin and other jazz greats.

Lavender Jazz’ classy presentation and energetic music – not to mention those purple ties – became an instant crowd-pleaser since its inception in the fall of 2003. Carreño said, “I’m going out on a limb to say this is our best band yet. With Danny Barber and Goshen High School Crimson Jazz I and II, we’ve put together the most incredible jazz event that Goshen College and the city of Goshen have ever seen!”

Carreño, now in his third year of directing Lavender Jazz, is an adjunct professor in the Goshen College Music Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Texas State University-San Marcos. He taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District and taught English as a Second Language in Texas, Wisconsin and Indiana for 13 years. For nearly 30 years, Carreño has performed as a professional percussionist in a wide variety of styles and venues. Carreño recently joined local Americana group Double Barrel Darrel and has performed with the Anna Montgomery Band and the Tim Hochstetler Trio.

Guest artist Danny Barber will be featured on a number of selections. Barber is known throughout the music industry for his in-depth sound, power and musicality as well as his ability to utilize all registers of the trumpet. He has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Band and Maynard Ferguson. Barber’s playing credentials as a freelance trumpeter include recording dates and performances with the Chicago, St. Louis and Utah symphony orchestras and numerous radio and television commercials; several Broadway shows including “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera”; and recordings with CBS Records, Styx, Chicago City Lights Orchestra, Brass Band of Battle Creek and the Buddy Childers Big Band. Barber can also be heard on four albums by arranger/composer Frank Mantooth and on the sound track from the movie “A League of Their Own.” His jazz and pop appearances include performances with some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Nancy Wilson, Kenny Rogers, Doc Severinsen, Natalie Cole, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, Anthony Quinn, Henry Mancini, Joel Grey, Ann Margaret, Tommy Tune and Louie Bellson.

Admission to the concert is $6 general admission, $4 seniors and students. Goshen College students are free. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566
