Hershberger Art Gallery to feature pieces from Chicago’s Printworks Gallery Oct. 20-Jan. 3

GOSHEN, Ind. – A collection of prints and drawings from the Printworks Gallery in Chicago will be on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery in the Goshen College Music Center from Oct. 20, 2005 to Jan. 3, 2006.

 

The exhibit will include works of art by Charles Wells, Nicholas Sistler, Ian Howard, Audrey Niffenegger and the late Hollis Sigler.

 

Wells, who lives near Philadelphia, is a well-known sculptor and etcher. He is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and a member of the National Academy in New York who has received three gold medals for sculpture from The National Academy Annual. His work is in many important collections such as the National Museum of American Art in Washington, the Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has participated in a significant number of group exhibitions in the United States and Europe, has had a number of shows at Far Gallery in New York, as well as solo shows in numerous galleries in the United States, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Israel.

 

Sistler received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1980. Solo and group exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Union League Club of Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center, Illinois State Museum, Rockford Art Museum and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. He has received grants and awards including several Illinois Arts Council awards. Sistler’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Rockford Art Museum, Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art (Northwestern University, Evanston) and Benedictine University (Illinois).

 

Howard is one of Scotland’s leading artists. He earned a master’s degree in fine art with honors from the Edinburgh College of Art. He was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983 and has played a very active role on committees of the Academy since that time. Howard’s work is shown widely in Europe and America.

 

Niffenegger received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985 and a master’s degree in fine art from Northwestern University in 1991. A talented writer and printmaker, Niffenegger has received an artist grant from the Vogelstein Foundation, an art scholarship from the Union League Civic Arts Foundation and a George D. and Isabella A. Brown Travelling Fellowship from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Chicago Cultural Center and the Spertus Museum.

 

Sigler, who died in 2001, received many grants and awards for her paintings, watercolors, drawings and printmaking during her career, most notably a Childe Hassam Purchase Award from the American Academy and Institution of Arts and Letters.

 

Established in Chicago in 1980, Printworks Gallery specializes in works on paper including prints, original drawings, photography and artists’ books. Printworks Gallery represents a large number of established artists, and promotes the work of important emerging artists.

 

A reception for this print exhibit will immediately follow a lecture by the 2005 Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist Terry Barrett which begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 in Rieth Recital Hall. Barrett, an expert in contemporary art criticism, is professor of art education at The Ohio State University.

 

The Hershberger Art Gallery, located in the Goshen College Music Center, is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, except during school vacations. The building is accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
