Autumn Hope Conference: Renewing Waters, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, Farmstead, Wolf Lake, Ind.
Many Christians are aware of the environmental damage humans cause; now take the time to reflect on the ways God is at work renewing creation. Follow the path of a watershed, learn how nature purifies water, hike, dialogue, reflect and worship. Guest speakers include GC alumni Doug Kaufman, pastor of Benton Mennonite Church, and Eric Kurtz, who works on municipal water issues.

1 p.m., Afternoon Sabbatical – Professor of Art John Blosser, “A Place Observed: The Search for a Personal Geography,” Sauder Concert Hall
Professor of Art John Blosser will share his experiences from a recent sabbatical and discuss his oil and watercolor paintings of places in northern Indiana and Illinois that are of particular interest to him. The paintings are on exhibit in the Hershberger Art Gallery.

24-Hour Hurricane Relief Hymn Sing, Rieth Recital Hall
This 24-Hour Hurricane Relief Hymn Sing will occur continuously from 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 until 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 as a way of praying for people who have been affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The hymn sing will begin in the college Church-Chapel, then move to Rieth Recital Hall in the Music Center at 1 p.m. on Friday, where the singing will continue until the following morning. Pledges are being solicited on a per hymn or per hour basis.

7 p.m., “Living Water, Living Faith” video premiere, Umble Center
In this video documentary produced by Associate Professor of Communication Pat McFarlane, 1983 Goshen College graduate Linda Christophel and professional video producer Ed Cundiff, Mennonite women of color around the world share their life and faith stories. From Poarch Creek Indian women in Alabama to a Belizean woman living in Los Angeles to a pastor in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – these stories span the globe and encourage the viewer to know that God is faithful in all of life’s circumstances. They are stories of faith, perseverance and courage, forgiveness and overcoming discrimination.

2-4 p.m., Library Gallery reception: “Pop-Mennonite” art exhibit, Good Library
New paintings and drawings by Don Swartzentruber of Winona Lake, Ind., depicting traditional Mennonite culture juxtaposed with images – including a number of cartoon figures – from American popular culture. Texts and sounds created by the artist add contextual elements to the visual representations. This exhibit is sponsored in part by the Indiana Arts Commission.
It will be on display through Dec. 9.
7:30 p.m., Northern Indiana Choral Festival, Sauder Concert Hall
Choral students from Goshen College and local area high schools will participate in a one-day choral festival, led by Goshen College professors Debra Brubaker and James Heiks and then perform an evening concert to conclude the festival.
Tickets are $6 adults, $4 seniors/students.

Professor Urs Leu, director of the rare book division of the Zentralbibliothek Zurich and expert on the Froschauer Bible, will present an illustrated public lecture. The event is sponsored by the Mennonite Historical Society and the Mennonite Historical Library.

7 p.m., Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist Series: Lecture by Terry Barrett, Rieth Recital Hall
An expert in contemporary art criticism, Terry Barrett is the Goshen College Art Department’s 2005 Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist. Barrett, professor of art education at The Ohio State University, will speak about his areas of expertise art education and critique.
Barrett, an art critic in education for the Ohio Arts Council, is the recipient of the Ohio State University Distinguished Teaching Award and is an Honored Educator of the Midwest Society for Photographic Education. He has also presented invited lectures on contemporary art and its criticism at universities across the United States and around the world, as well as serving as a consultant to the education departments of many art museums and institutions.
Immediately following the lecture will be a reception for the new art exhibit in the Hershberger Art Gallery, “Print Exhibit.” This exhibition of prints and drawings from the Printworks Gallery in Chicago focuses on artworks on paper. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 3, 2006.

Conference “Cultivating a Culture of Calling: Mennonite Perspectives on Vocation,” Church-Chapel
The CALL Project is sponsoring this conference for pastors, professors, students, church leaders and others who are interested in exploring the meaning and practice of vocation and calling. The conference will include presentations, discussion forums and plenary speakers.
Keynote speaker Michael G. Cartwright, from the University of Indianapolis, will talk about his many years of vocation work with college students and focus on misleading metaphors and muddled missions.”

The Clothesline Project, Schrock Plaza
For the third annual Clothesline Project at Goshen College, T-shirts will again line the plaza on display. This display of T-shirts was created by survivors or friends of survivors of sexual or domestic violence, bearing witness to their experience. The T-shirts were created by community and campus groups.

Learn about solar power, wind generators, ground source heat pumps and other efficient strategies for heating and cooling from Alan Chalifoux of Eta Engineers, Champaign, Ill. This firm is overseeing the engineering for the collegiate facility that Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center is building. The workshop will include a visit to the building site.

4 p.m., Performing Arts Series – International Sejong Soloists with Eugenia Zukerman,Sauder Concert Hall
Praised as a “top notch conductor-less string orchestra” by “The Washington Post,” International Sejong Soloists (ISS) has given critically acclaimed concerts at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and in many cultural centers of Europe and the Far East. The group was recently featured as young artists-in-residence on NPR’s “Performance Today,” and since 1997 have served as ensemble-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival. Eugenia Zukerman, one of the finest flutists and well-known television personality and arts commentator, collaborates with ISS in this concert appearance.

7:30 p.m., Organ Recital: Bradley Lehman, Rieth Recital Hall
Bradley Lehman, a 1986 Goshen College graduate, will present a concert of organ music on the new “Opus 41” organ in Rieth Recital Hall. The Goshen College pipe organ is the first full-sized organ to be tuned the way Bach preferred since the 18th century, as recently proposed by Lehman, of Dayton, Va.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, available at the door. GC students admitted free with ID.
