Gregory Hand to present organ recital at Goshen College on Sept. 27

Concert: Organ and Hymn Sing Sunday Series – Dr. Gregory Hand

Cost: $7 adults, $5 seniors/students, available at the door only one hour before the recital. GC students free with ID.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Dr. Gregory Hand, University of Iowa music professor, will open the 2009-2010 Rieth Recital Hall Organ and Hymn Sing Sunday Series with an organ recital on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at 4 p.m. Hand will perform a program of works by J.S. Bach and 16th-17th century Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck.

Hand was named Assistant Professor of Organ at the University of Iowa in 2008. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of University Chapel Organist at Northwestern University, where he also taught in the music theory department. He was awarded the doctorate of musical arts degree from the University of Michigan, where he studied with James Kibbie.

Hand has participated in several international organ competitions, including the Grand Prix de Chartres (France), St. Albans (England), Prix Andre Marchal (France) and the Dublin International Organ Competition. He is also active as a harpsichordist and continuo player. Recent engagements include Giulio Cesare with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Ritorno d'Ulisse with Chicago Opera Theater and several concerts with Ars Antigua, a Chicago-based period ensemble.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors/students and are only available at the door one hour before the recital.

Sunday, Dec. 13, 4 p.m. – Moravian Hymn Sing with Assistant Professor of Music Scott Hochstetler leading. Free

Sunday, Feb. 14, 4 p.m. – Organ Recital by Dr. Craig Cramer of Notre Dame University. Tickets are $7/$5, available at the door.

Sunday, Feb. 21, 4 p.m. – Hymns and Prayers for Lent, a community hymn sing led by Alan and Eleanor Kreider. Free.

Sunday, March 21, 5 p.m. – Bach's 325th Birthday Recital. Works by J.S. Bach performed by Assistant Professor of Music Christine Thögersen and students, followed by a birthday party reception. Tickets are $7/$5, available at the door.

Sunday, April 18, 4 p.m. – Community Hymn Sing; Audience Selections, led by Professor of Music Debra Brubaker. Free.
