GOSHEN, Ind. – The seventh annual Goshen College and Ryan's Place Grief Seminar, titled "The Many Faces of Grief," will be held Friday, Oct. 16 in the Goshen College Church-Chapel Fellowship Rooms.
Dr. Carol Jarvis will open the seminar with a lecture on the day's theme, and identify the sources of grief that impact people and discuss the effect this has on daily lives. Jarvis is an adjunct professor of social work at Goshen College and adjunct lecturer in women's studies at Indiana University, South Bend.
The seminar, especially recommended for social workers, educators, counselors, therapists, nurses, clergy and other human service professionals, is co-sponsored by Goshen College and Ryan's Place, and will offer several breakout sessions in the morning and afternoon featuring qualified local therapists and practitioners. A panel discussion about pertinent issues raised throughout the day will conclude the event.
The seminar schedule includes: "Recognizing and Coping with Economic Losses: Surviving Job Changes, Job Loss or Lay-off for Yourself or Your Spouse" by Beth Beams; "The Faces of Grief" by Aileac Deegan; "Grief and Loss by Suicide: A Permanent Solution for a Temporary Problem. Trite or True?" by Rex Gleim; "Good Grief: How to Help Children Cope with Death and Loss" by Jennifer Miller; "How Far Do the Ripples Go? Grief and Military Deployment" by Rick Ritter; and "Till Death Do Us Part: Surviving the Premature End of Marriage" by Beck Unternahrer.
The objectives for the seminar is for attendees to learn how to work with families who are experiencing loss and grief for a variety of reasons, learn about resource materials, establish a network of personal connections and provide hope in time of loss.
The cost of the seminar is $60 for the general public and $20 for students and seniors. The registration fee includes lunch, snacks, a resource notebook and a continuing education certificate (6 CEUs are available).
