Goshen College art exhibit celebrates 'Ceramic Legacy';
Show opens Sept. 20 and runs through Nov. 4, reception held Oct. 3
GOSHEN, Ind. -- The identity of the Goshen College art department includes its strong ceramics program developed by the vision of Professor Emeritus of Art Marvin Bartel. The upcoming art exhibit, "A Ceramic Legacy," which opens Sept. 20 in the Hershberger Art Gallery, Music Center, will celebrate Bartel's work and the many talented and innovative potters who have graduated from Goshen College.The exhibit runs through Nov. 4, and an exhibit reception will be held Oct. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Hershberger Art Gallery.
Bartel's arrival in 1970 to Goshen College began a growth in the quality and range of ceramic activity in the department. The exhibition of his ceramic work in regional and national venues and contributions to the field in fuel-efficient kiln building, publication of his writings in ceramic publications and especially his ability to engage and inspire students brought recognition to the art department. Many of his students have pursued ceramics in graduate school and as exhibiting ceramic artists, production potters, ceramic educators or in a variety of other ways made ceramic a part of their lives.
Merrill Krabill, a student of Bartel's, and now GC associate professor of art, said, "When I was a student, ceramics was always a very popular class. Marvin was never limited to what had been done before and taught that to his students. I remember that he was always very interested in creativity and making sure that students explored the possibilities open to them."
The potters who will be displaying their work in the exhibit are: Bruce Bishop '80, Suzanne Bishop '85, Patty Burns '92, Fred Driver '75, David Gamber '83, Jane Graber '76, Marie Harnish '84, Andy Hershberger '95, Keith Hershberger '94, Eric Kaufmann '97, Merrill Krabill '79, Lynn Lais '78, Dick Lehman '76, Keith Lehman '93, Chad Martin '98, Tim Martin '90, Dennis Maust '76, Annemee Siersma '98, Bob Smoker '77, Greg Stahly '01, Jeff Unzicker '96, Tom Unzicker '91 and Royce Yoder '76.
