September 2010 events at Goshen College

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

28-30
New Student Days

New Goshen College students will move in to their residence hall rooms and take part in several days of orientation.

Saturday, Aug. 28
8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Check-in at Church-Chapel Fellowship Hall. New students may move in to their residence halls during this time also.
2-3 p.m. – Welcome convocation for students and parents into the Goshen College community, Church-Chapel
5 p.m. – Presidential picnic for new students, their families, faculty and staff on green in front of Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center

Sunday, Aug. 29
10-11 a.m. – Parents' Council coffee for students and parents, Schrock Plaza
11 a.m. – Worship service for new students and parents, Church-Chapel
Noon – Parents say goodbye and depart.
2-7:45 p.m. – New students spend the afternoon getting acquainted, doing challenge course activities and having fun at Merry Lea Environmental Center near Wolf Lake, Ind., located 40 minutes southeast of Goshen.
2 p.m. – New transfer students meet at Schrock Plaza to walk to the College Cabin for a time of interaction with returning transfer students.
2-8 p.m. – Returning students arrive and move in.

Monday, Aug. 30
1 p.m. – Check-in for returning students
7 p.m. – Fall semester evening classes begin

Tuesday, Aug. 31
8 a.m. – Fall day classes begin

10 a.m., Opening convocation: President Dr. James E. Brenneman, Church-Chapel
Goshen College President Dr. James E. Brenneman will launch the 2010-11 school year with this opening convocation.

2:45 a.m., Students depart for semester in Jamaica and Peru through Study-Service Term, south end of the Union.

9:45 a.m., Students depart for semester in Egypt through Study-Service Term, south end of the Union.

Wilderness First Aid
, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, Farmstead Site
This 16-hour course will be taught by the SOLO School of Emergency Medicine and Rescue and comes with a two-year certification recognized by the American Camping Association, U.S. Coast Guard, and various guide licensing boards.
Cost: $195 includes lunches.

7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Series:  Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Sauder Concert Hall
In its 50th year of entertaining and educating audiences around the world, Preservation Hall Jazz Band performs its exciting sounds in Sauder Concert Hall. With a mission of perpetuating the New Orleans Jazz art form, the 2005 devastation of the city by Hurricane Katrina has made the band's efforts ever more significant. The Tucson Weekly writes "New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band keeps the joyousness alive."

2-4 p.m. Reception for exhibit: Dick Lehman – Collected Meanings: Japanese Pottery and Travel Stories, Hershberger Art Gallery
Work from the acclaimed local potter Dick Lehman's collection of Japanese ceramics is on display until Sept. 12. Lehman is a 1976 graduate of Goshen College. The show includes work by some of Japan's finest potters. Lehman's interest in Japanese ceramics grew through travel to Japan and relationships with artists working there. Shiho Kanzaki was an especially important influence. Interaction between the two grew into a friendship that opened up possibilities for interchange and growth in Lehman's own work. He wrote extensively about travel in Japan and the ideas that were nourished as a result. This exhibit includes a travelogue Lehman wrote for a Japanese website and numerous articles from Ceramics Monthly. Lehman's Goshen studio is now known across the United States and beyond. Part of his life as a potter these days includes entertaining guests from distances as far away as Japan.

1 p.m., Afternoon Sabbatical: "A Cloud of Witnesses – I Am a Part of All I have Met," Professor Emerita of Education Kathryn Aschliman, Sauder Concert Hall
People and experiences influenced the 34 years of Kathryn Aschliman's tenure in the Goshen College Laboratory Kindergarten. Kathryn will delightfully highlight Robert Fulghum's conclusion that "No matter how old you are – when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together."

9 a.m., Art exhibit opens: John Blosser – Retrospective Exhibit, Hershberger Art Gallery
John Blosser, professor of art, has taught at Goshen College for 10 years and before that at Hesston (Kan.) College for 20 years. This exhibit features the work he has done throughout his career as he nears retirement in 2011. There will be a reception for this show during Alumni Weekend, Saturday, Oct. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit is up through Oct. 24, 2010.

Autumn Hope Conference: "Earth as Ally: Facing Climate Change Together,"
Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center
Each year, Merry Lea holds an Autumn Hope Conference, integrating faith-based dialog, fieldwork and environmental issues critical to our times. "Earth as Ally" will focus on global climate change and the critical role healthy landscapes play in mitigating rising CO2 levels. Trail time includes fieldwork in prairies and forests and a look at phenology. Breakout sessions will be tailored to specific settings such as congregations, church camps, farms, urban areas, private property. The weekend concludes with worship.
Cost: $100. Limited lodging available on site for $15 per night.

Celebrate Service Day
The entire campus community will fan out into the Goshen area to serve the community on this day. Colloquium classes, residence hall floors and other housing units and groups spend the day as servant leaders. All classes are suspended.

8:15 a.m., Campus Open House, Rieth Recital Hall
Prospective students can spend a day at Goshen College to see what makes it unique. There will be opportunities to attend a class, take a campus tour, hear about Study-Service Term and more. An overnight visit in one of the residence halls is also available upon request.
