Goshen College Afternoon Sabbatical Series heads to Chicago on
Nov. 11 for The Pirate Queen” musical
GOSHEN, Ind. – When “The Pirate
Queen” makes its world premiere in Chicago, theater-goers
with the Goshen College Afternoon Sabbatical Series will be treated
to the musical on Nov. 11, before its cast moves to Broadway at the
end of the month.
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg,
who together also wrote the famed “Les Miserables” and
“Miss Saigon,” adapted “The Pirate Queen”
from Morgan Llywelyn’s popular novel, “Grania: She King
of the Irish Seas.” Boubil also worked with John
Dempsey to compose the lyrics for the musical, while Moya Doherty
and John McColgan, the producers of “Riverdance,”
produce the show.
“The Pirate Queen,” staged at the
Cadillac Palace Theatre, “combines classic storytelling and a
sweeping score, with the powerful, vibrant traditions of Irish
dance and song,” and promises to be “a modern musical
event that is both an historic romance and a timeless epic,”
according to early press.
The musical, set in 16th century
Ireland, shares the extraordinary life story of Grace
O’Malley, the unconventional daughter of a mariner family who
became a pirate and chieftain, succeeding in a male-dominated
profession, and also a mother. Upon her father’s death,
O’Malley, who had sailed all her life, inherited his title
and his fleet, commanding three large ships and about 300 men. She
lived a pirate’s life for the next 50 years – sailing,
trading and raiding from the coast of Spain to the Baltic Sea,
gaining land and castles – as well as enemies – among
English overlords.
