Fall classes for senior adults offered through Lifelong Learning Institute

 

GOSHEN, Ind. – Senior adults will be returning to classes this fall also, and can study digital photography, movies, local history, hymns and World War II stories.

 

The Lifelong Learning Institute of Elkhart County is offering five, two-week courses from September through November 2007 at Goshen College and the Goshen Public Library.

 

Course dates and offerings include:

 

Sept. 5, 7, 12, 14: Digital Photography 101, Goshen College Newcomer Center 19. Goshen College Provost Emeritus Henry (Hank) Weaver will teach basic digital camera use, photo enhancement techniques, composition, how to send photos via e-mail, how to file photos and what to look for in a digital camera.

 

Sept. 18, 20, 25, 27: At the Movies, Goshen Public Library. Movie enthusiast Irene Gross will show clips from selected movies, discuss what makes a worthwhile movie, what movie reviews to trust and where to see the best movies.

 

Oct. 1, 3, 8, 10: Local History, Goshen Public Library. Karen McDonald, teacher and member of the Goshen Historical Society, will help uncover stories of local landmarks such as the Courthouse Clock, Police Booth, King Neptune, the Olympia, the Spohn Building, Carnegie Library and others.

 

Oct. 16, 18, 23, 25: Hymns in History and Culture, Goshen College, Music Center 153. Goshen College Professor Emerita of Music Mary Oyer will lead conversation about where hymns come from and how they change over time, across denominations or cultures.

 

Oct. 29, 31, Nov. 5, 7: World War II Perspectives and Stories, Goshen College, Music Center 110. Owen Hess will share his interest in a war now more than 50 years past, and will invite participants to actively share both their personal stories and their perspectives from reading.

 

The Lifelong Learning Institute of Elkhart County is sponsored by Goshen College and Greencroft Retirement Communities. It is a member of the Elderhostel Institute Network. “Everywhere growing numbers of retiring seniors are seeking stimulation, continued growth, and connections with others of similar interests,” said Wilbur Birky, co-director. “We want to invite you to experience the same right here at home.”

 

Tuition is $40 per course. People on Medicaid or living in HUD housing, may register free; their tuition is covered, courtesy of The Learning Society of Elkhart County.
