Goshen College series to aid administrative support staff;
Public ‘Lunch and Learn’ programs offered in Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College’s Management Development Program announces its six-week “Lunch and Learn” line-up designed for administrative staff to improve work habits and the work environment through a series of lunchtime seminars in Goshen led by experienced community leaders.

Classes will be held each Tuesday from Sept. 12 to Oct. 17 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Goshen College Church-Chapel, 1700 South Main Street.

Classes include:

•  Sept. 12 – “Conflict Resolution: Making a Case for Confrontation” with Beck Unternahrer, a therapist in private practice. Over 50 percent of employees state they have lost work time worrying about whether the instigator of conflict would do it again; others report that they have changed jobs to escape from an instigator. This presentation will offer the opportunity to review the benefits and costs of confronting conflict.

•  Sept. 19 – “Busy Women – Making Time for Your Health” with Laura Morris, medical director of The Retreat. The information superhighway is jammed with health advice. Learn from an expert about trustworthy information to help women learn about their constantly growing, changing and beautiful bodies and minds.

•  Sept. 26 – “Beating the Burnout: Empowerment Drumming in the Workplace,” with Garner Wireman, a professional drum circle facilitator. This interactive workshop will explore key evidence-based elements, potential benefits and widespread applications of drumming for the workplace. Participants will take part in an empowerment drum group, and will have a great time interacting with each other, building friendships, expressing themselves and finding their individual rhythms.

•  Oct. 3 – “Our Stories: Insights for Cultivating Intercultural Relationships” with Odelet Nance, director of multicultural affairs at Goshen College. As the community grows more racially and ethnically diverse, it is critical to engage in healthy dialogue that promotes awareness and understanding. Stories from international students, domestic minorities and immigrants will also be included to broaden perspectives. This session will also explore practical strategies in developing pathways to authentic intercultural relationships.

•  Oct. 10“Invoking Change – The Art of Persuasion” with Karen Lehman, former senior vice president at Greencroft Retirement Community. Often when people present ideas for change and improvement in a work environment, they are overlooked or ignored? Learn how to establish a reputation of trust, respect, knowledge and experience by laying a foundation of being taken seriously. Learn how to present ideas and make contributions through discussion of real-life scenarios.

•  Oct. 17 – “Polishing Your Professional Presence ” with Kara McClure, vice president for Welch Packaging. This session will explain how image management and contemporary business etiquette contribute to career success.

The six-week series costs $99 per person. Cost is $95 per person if three or more people register from the same company. Lunches are included. Tax deduction is available for all expenses of continuing management education undertaken to improve professional skills. Attendance of four or more sessions is required to earn .6 continuing education credits.
