Goshen College Music Center offers lessons, classes and ensembles for all ages

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College Community School of the Arts (CSA) is accepting registrations from community members for participation in its fall semester musical offerings. The Music Together® registration deadline is Sept. 10; registration deadline for all other offerings is Aug. 27.

Musical opportunities for young children include:

  • Music Together® music and movement classes for children birth to age 5 and a caregiver. Classes are held in various locations throughout Elkhart County.
  • Kindermusik® Young Child music enrichment classes for children ages 5-7 with instructor Jenny Campagna.
  • Music Makers class for students in grades 1-2 with instructor Kent Dutchersmith, using Orff instruments and methods.
  • Suzuki instruction in violin, viola and cello through the CSA String Academy for students age 5 and up, directed by Rosalyn Troiano. String students can also participate in string instrument ensembles through the CSA String Academy.
  • Beginning piano pedagogy laboratory classes for students in grades 2 and 3, taught by Goshen College professor and piano instructor Beverly Lapp.

Musical opportunities for school-age through adult students include:

  • Private instruction in violin, viola, and cello through the CSA String Academy, directed by Rosalyn Troiano. String students can also participate in Allegro and Vivace Strings ensembles.
  • Private piano instruction for students age 7 and up. Thirty, 45 and 60-minute lessons are offered. Piano lessons are also offered for students with special needs, taught by specially trained instructor Christine Thögersen.
  • Voice lessons for students age 13 and up with Sandy Hill.
  • Pipe organ instruction for youth and adults with Christine Thögersen. Pre-college organ students can also join the CSA Organ Club, which meets several times each year to interact with guest organists and attend organ concerts and sites of interest.
  • Lessons on other instruments may be arranged.
  • Two community children's choirs – Rejoice, for grades 3-5 directed by Rosemary Rupp; and Shout for Joy, for grades 4-6 led by Sandy Hill.  Choral auditions will be held Aug. 23 and 24 in the Goshen College Music Center; call (574) 535-7361 for more information or to schedule an audition.
  • New Horizons String Orchestra for adults, directed by Brook Bennett

As a bonus, CSA students and immediate family members may attend many events at the Music Center for free that others pay admission to attend. A list of eligible concerts is available in the Music Center Main Office.

Goshen College has a long tradition of preparatory programs in piano and violin for pre-college community youth. Soon after the completion of the Goshen College Music Center, these programs and other initiatives were combined to establish the Community School of the Arts in the fall of 2003. The CSA provides quality arts education and performance experiences for people of all ages, abilities and economic circumstances. The CSA is committed to finding ways for deserving students to study music, offering need-based scholarships awarded on a sliding scale through its scholarship programs.
