WOLF LAKE, Ind. – If you were on a hike and a medical emergency came up miles from help, would you know what to do?
Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College will host a wilderness first aid course on Aug. 14 and 15 from 8:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Merry Lea's Farmstead site. Instructors from the SOLO School of Emergency Medicine and Rescue will teach the 16-hour course.
SOLO describes Wilderness First Aid as an entry-level course for outdoor enthusiasts who want to protect themselves and their friends on short outdoor trips. The curriculum covers patient assessment, rescue techniques, fractures, dislocations, splint improvisation, spinal cord injury, management of environmental emergencies, soft tissue injuries, shock, long-term patient care and preparing for the unexpected.
Wilderness First Aid comes with a two-year certification recognized by the American Camping Association, the U.S. Coast Guard and various guide licensing boards. There are no other SOLO Wilderness First Aid courses offered in the Midwest until October.
