More financial assistance now available for master's of nursing students because of grant

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program has received the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, which will in turn provide increased financial assistance for students as they seek an advanced nurse education.

The college received $5,761 for student tuition grants, which can be provided to select students in the family nurse practitioner (FNP) program or clinical nurse leader (CNL) program.

"Receiving this grant assists the Goshen College Department of Nursing to impact the broader community through the provision of nurse practitioners in a primary care shortage area and clinical nurse leaders to impact quality health outcomes in a variety of healthcare settings," said Brenda Srof, director of the college's graduate program in nursing.

Goshen's MSN program is designed for primarily part-time study over a three-year study plan. The program is designed with courses meeting once per week during late afternoon and evening hours. The FNP and CNL tracks are comprised of 48 and 40 total credit hours respectively, and prepare students for the respective certification exam. Eligible students to the MSN program have received a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program of nursing. The MSN curriculum is designed to reflect the college's core values of Christ-centeredness, servant leadership, compassionate peacemaking, global citizenship and passionate learning. The program was accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education in 2009 after beginning in 2007.

Since 1950, when the Goshen College nursing program became the first liberal arts college in Indiana to offer a bachelor of science degree in nursing, more than 1,600 graduates have established themselves in successful careers as registered nurses.
