Canoe trip on the Elkhart River will focus on local water quality

GOSHEN, Ind. – See familiar territory from a new perspective. Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College is sponsoring a half-day canoe trip up the Elkhart River on Saturday, June 24 from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The group will meet at Oxbow Park canoe launch for a presentation on water quality and some boating tips from Paul Steury, Merry Lea education coordinator. Mark Salee, a regulatory affairs specialist for the City of Elkhart Public Works, will also talk about how the city is improving their water quality. Paddlers will then follow the Elkhart River from Oxbow Park to Island Park in Elkhart, where it joins the St. Joe River.

Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided. Participants should bring a packed lunch, sunscreen and binoculars. The cost of the canoe trip is $10 per person or $30 per household.
