Goshen College continues tradition of piano teaching and learning at summer workshop

GOSHEN, Ind. – Every two years in the summer, teachers and students from across the country gather at Goshen College for the Piano Workshop and Academy, attending lectures, master classes and recital performances presented by distinguished clinicians, composers and performers. This summer, the tradition will continue as more than 70 piano students and teachers gather from June 20-23 for Goshen College's 37th Piano Workshop and Academy.

The Student Academy, for ages 13 to 18, will occur from June 20 to 23, and the Teacher Workshop will take place from June 21 to 23.

One of the highlights of Piano Workshop and Academy are the evening recitals that are open to the public:

  • Monday, June 20 – 7:30 p.m., Piano Workshop Student Showcase Recital, Rieth Recital Hall, Music Center. Free admission.
  • Tuesday, June 21 – 7:30 p.m., Piano Workshop Recital: Matthew Hill, solo piano, presents "Sounds and Colors: Music by Debussy, Messiaen and Scriabin," Rieth Recital Hall, Music Center. Free admission for workshop participants, $5 for all others.

  • Thursday, June 23 – 7:30 p.m., Piano Workshop Recital: Piano Ensemble Concert, featuring a commissioned duet by Melody Bober, Sauder Concert Hall, Music Center. Free.

The Piano Workshop and Academy is an outreach of the Goshen College Music Department, and seeks to promote the continued professional advancement of teachers while instilling the highest artistic standards for the next generation of pianists.

"The Piano Workshop and Academy is a great way for the Music Department to connect with teachers both regionally and nationally" said Beverly Lapp, associate professor of music and a coordinator of the event. "We know that young people are interested in educational opportunities during the summer and our workshop gives them the opportunity to work on their piano studies with peers to refine repertoire they have already learned, and to test their ability to prepare a performance in a short amount of time."

Teachers participating in the workshop will have the opportunity to listen to lectures relevant to piano pedagogy, performance and literature. Students enrolled in the academy will be able to participate in small group lessons, personal practice time and other sessions concerning a variety of topics geared toward the development of student pianists. Teachers and students will meet together for student recitals, master classes and evening concerts.

This year's guest clinicians and performers include Carolyn True, professor of music at Trinity University (San Antonio, Texas); Garik Pedersen, professor of piano at Eastern Michigan University; and Melody Bober, composer, arranger, clinician and teacher. In addition, Beverly Lapp, associate professor of music at Goshen College, and Matthew Hill, professor of music at Goshen College, will offer lectures.
