Summer 2007 events at Goshen College

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

March 11-July 13
Art exhibit:“Hutterite Life,” Library Gallery

This exhibit includes clothing, implements, folk arts, manuscripts and photographs depicting the culture of the Hutterites, an Anabaptist-related communal group living in the western U.S. and Canada. Prepared and interpreted by Leonard Gross, Jan Gleysteen and Faye Peterson. Sponsored by the Mennonite-Amish Museum Committee and dedicated to the memory of Beulah Hostetler (1926-2005). The gallery is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday (closed on weekends).

Goshen College Women’s Basketball Camp,
Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center

From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day, girls in grades 2-9 can learn basketball fundamentals and sharpen their skills from Goshen College coaches and players. This camp is full.

Canoeing at Chain-O-Lakes State Park

Paul Steury, K-12 education coordinator at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, will lead a half-day canoe trip through the Chain-O-Lakes State Park.

9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Plein air Painting Workshop, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, Farmstead Barn

Plein air is a French term meaning painting from life in the outdoors. Join seasoned Plein air painter Diane Overmyer for a workshop that will focus on the practical information every plein-air painter needs to know. Overmyer will give a talk and a demo in oil paints, and then students will have an opportunity to work in the medium of their choice, with additional personal instruction from Overmyer. The class is suited for any level of painter, but prior use of your chosen medium is a must. Overmyer is the owner and director of Sycamore Fine Arts in The Old Bag Factory in Goshen. Educational Tour – Athens and the Greek Isles

Bob Birkey, Goshen College professor of social work, will lead a group to Athens and the Greek Cyclades Isles. Birkey spent his 2003 sabbatical in Greece and has traveled there several times. The trip, hosted by GC Coordinator of Community Programs and Adult Educational Travel Janette Yoder, will include important cultural and historical sites, wonderful natural beauty and interesting local flavor. This trip is sold out.

Maple Leaf Field Event Camp

A graduate of the GC strings prep program, Chapman will be performing a violin recital. Free admission.

Goshen College Boys and Girls Soccer Camp

This fun-filled soccer experience will give players all the tools they need to become better as they are trained in proper soccer technique. Kindergarten Kickers, ages 5-6 years old (cost $75), will meet 10-11:15 a.m. Students in grades 1-8 (cost $180) will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camps will be directed by Thavisak (Tavi) Mounsithiraj, head coach of the Goshen College men’s soccer team, 2005 MCC Coach of the Year and 2006 NAIA Regional Coach of the Year.

9 a.m., Four Seasons Hike: Summer, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center

Stunning prairie flowers will be a highlight of the third of the Four Seasons series, which features the same trails during each season of the year. This hike begins with a quick slide show reviewing what our path looked like in January and May. Then Dave Miller, Merry Lea program director, will lead the group through summer woodlands and fields of yellow coneflowers.

9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Digital Storytelling in the Classroom Workshop, PC Computer Lab, Union

Learn how to use digital storytelling projects and presentations to share curriculum content in an engaging way. This professional development workshop over two days is designed for elementary through high school educators interested in digital storytelling projects with students. This hands-on workshop will concentrate on making digital films, digital storytelling preparation and unit planning. Cost: $300 per person (15 percent discount for schools that send three or more). New Student Days

New Goshen College students will move in to their residence hall rooms and take part in several days of orientation before fall semester classes begin on Aug. 27, with the Monday evening classes.

10 a.m., Opening Convocation: President Dr. James E. Brenneman, Church-Chapel

Goshen College President Dr. James E. Brenneman will launch the 2007-08 school year in this opening convocation.

Goshen College’s Administration Building, Church-Chapel, Good Library, Music Center, Newcomer Center, Union Gymnasium, Umble Center and Westlawn Lounge are accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
