Summer 2006 events at Goshen College

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

May 28-Sept. 10
Art exhibit: Jaye Bumbaugh – sculpture, drawing and painting, Hershberger Art Gallery
Long-time Bluffton (Ohio) University Professor of Art Jaye Bumbaugh will exhibit his sculptures, drawings and paintings in this summer exhibit. Bumbaugh taught at the university from 1967 to 2005.

A reception for this exhibit will be held on Sept. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Goshen College Girls Basketball Camp,
Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center
From 9 to 10 a.m. each day, girls in grades 3-4 can learn basketball fundamentals and sharpen their skills from Goshen College coaches and players. Grades 5-8 will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cost: $25, though registration is already full.

Goshen College Boys Basketball Camp,
Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center
Boys in grades 3-8 can learn basketball fundamentals and sharpen their skills from Goshen College coaches. From 1 to 2:15 p.m. each day, boys in grades 3-5 will meet. From 2:30 to 4 p.m., will be camp for grades 6-8. Cost: $40. For more information, call Stan Daugherty at (574) 535-7493.

Goshen College Higher-Level Father-Son Basketball Camp
, Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center
This weekend event with a Christian perspective provides a wonderful opportunity for fathers and sons to bond, while learning and playing basketball in an overnight camp setting lead by Goshen College coaches. It is for boys in grades 1-8. Cost: $295 for fathers and sons (includes lodging, meals, T-shirts and a basketball). For more information, call Stan Daugherty at (574) 535-7493.

Goshen College Field Event Camp

This camp will provide jr. high and high school level athletes with expert coaching and training drills, by coaches from Goshen College and local area high schools, in pole vault, long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. On June 15, the camp will run from 4-7 p.m., and on June 17 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The two-day camp costs $40. Early registration for new students
New students enrolling for the first time at Goshen College are invited to register for classes with an adviser and receive input from Student Life to become familiar with college life. Parents are invited to attend and enjoy sessions specifically to relate important information for them.

The day begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Church-Chapel and ends in the early afternoon.

Goshen College Volleyball Camp, Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center
This volleyball camp, open to girls and boys from ages 8-18, will include a session from 8 a.m. to noon and features specialized instruction in volleyball skills and strategy. Cost: $100. Registration due by June 1.

2006 Piano Workshop and Academy, Music Center
For more than 30 years the Piano Workshop and Academy has stimulated and informed both teachers and students. Clinicians this year include Paul Wirth, Nancy Bachus, Christopher Hepp, Jacqueline Herbein and Matthew Hill. Featuring guest artist Arthur Greene and Robert Vandall, composer of the year.

Staff of the 2006 Piano Workshop and Academy will present an opening concert in Rieth Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $6 for seniors and students.

The final recital in the Piano Workshop recital series will feature student performances and the premier of a new piece by Robert Vandall, the “Composer of the Year” for the 2006 Goshen College Piano Workshop. Admission is free.

Goshen College Soccer Day Camp,
Goshen College soccer fields
This fun-filled soccer experience will give players all the tools they need to become better as they are trained in proper soccer technique. Kindergarten Kickers, ages 5-6 years old (cost $65), will meet 10-11:15 a.m. Students in grades 1-8 (cost $175) will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camps will be directed by Thavisak (Tavi) Mounsithiraj, head coach of Goshen College men’s soccer team and 2005 MCC Coach of the Year.

New Student Days

New Goshen College students will move in to their residence hall rooms and take part in several days of orientation before fall semester classes begin on Aug. 28, with the Monday evening classes.

10 a.m., Opening Convocation: President Dr. James E. Brenneman, Church-Chapel
New Goshen College President Dr. James E. Brenneman will launch the 2006-07 school year in this opening convocation. His official inauguration will be Sept. 10.

Goshen College’s Administration Building, Church-Chapel, Good Library, Music Center, Newcomer Center, Union Gymnasium, Umble Center and Westlawn Lounge are accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
