Summer 2008 events at Goshen College

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

Art exhibit:
“Heirlooms,” Library Gallery

“Heirlooms,” an exhibit of folk arts inherited in Mennonite and Amish families, includes quilts, coverlets, fraktur, furniture, family registers, clothing, toys. The exhibit honors S. L. Yoder, GC professor emeritus of education and longtime interpreter of Mennonite and Amish cultures to public audiences. This exhibit runs until Aug. 15. The gallery is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday (closed on weekends).

8 a.m.-12 p.m.,Goshen College Basketball Girls Fundamentals Camp, Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center

Learn the basics of dribbling, passing, catching, faking, pivoting, footwork and body control from Goshen College coaches and players. For girls in 3rd-9th grade. 8 a.m.-12 p.m., Goshen College Basketball Girls Three-Day Shooting Camp, Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center

Learn the basics of the jump shot, layup, free throw and inside scoring from Goshen College coaches and players. Players participating in the camp receive a T-shirt, basketball, contests and awards. For girls in 3rd-9th grade. Cost is $25 per player or $20 for sisters from the same family. 6:30 p.m., NatureFest, Merry Lea Environmental Center of Goshen College

Join us for hikes and seminars for people of all ages. Hunt for birds and bugs, take your family on a wetland investigation, find out what Indiana plants were once used as medicines, meet a bat enthusiast and his bats, enjoy homemade ice cream and more. 8 a.m., Turtle Trot 5-K Run, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, Farmstead Site

Come join Merry Lea’s second annual Turtle Trot, a 5-K race that will go past beautiful meadows, forests and wetlands. The race will begin at the Farmstead and wind through some of Merry Lea’s most scenic property. Prizes for the first male and female runners. Note that the Turtle Trot coincides with NatureFest. 9 a.m.-noon,Boy’s Basketball Camp, Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center

This camp is ideal for all levels of basketball playing experience. It will emphasize the fundamental skills of basketball including shooting, ball handling, passing, defense and rebounding. There will also be plenty of team instruction and strategy. The camp is available to boys entering 4th-9th grades in the fall of 2008. Registration deadline: June 1. Cost: $80. Thursday, 4-7 p.m., Track Field Events and Hurdles Camp, Eigsti Track and Field Complex

Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Track Field Events and Hurdles Camp, Eigsti Track and Field Complex

This camp is designed to give junior high and high school level athletes expert coaching and training skills. Proper technique, drills, speed development, weight training and video analysis will be done with each athlete. Videos of top athletes in each event will be shown and critiqued to teach the athlete more about the event and how to perform at the top level. Events covered will be: pole vault, high jump, hurdles, long jump, shot put and discus.

Educational Tour – The Arts in Britain – England, Scotland and Wales

Professor Emeritus of Music Doyle Preheim and Mary Jo Preheim will lead this trip through England, Scotland and Wales. Some of the highlights of this trip will be enjoying music, theater, art and architecture. This trip is sold out.

Piano Workshop and Academy

The Piano Workshop and Academy is designed to serve the professional needs of piano teachers working at all levels and in a variety of settings. A concurrent academy for piano students ages 13-18 creates a dynamic atmosphere in which teachers and students learn together and from each other.

Guest clinicians include Douglas Bomberger, professor of music and department chair of fine and performing arts at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County, Pa.; Jessica Johnson, assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music; Catherine Rollin, 2008 composer in residence, a well-known clinician who brings an artist’s imagination, a teacher’s pedagogical insight and a composer’s need to express to her many workshops across the U.S. and Canada; and Mark Swartzentruber, concert pianist.

9 a.m.,Canoeing with Merry Lea

Join Merry Lea’s Paul Steury in Noble County at the Mallard Roost #3 access site on County Road 550 for a canoe trip through the Mallard Roost Wetland Conservation Area, located south of State Road 6 between Ligonier and Albion. Canoes and canoe gear provided; bring plenty of cold water, a lunch and protection from the sun. Cost: $10 per person; $30 maximum per family. Goshen College Boys and Girls Soccer Camp
, Goshen College Soccer Complex

This fun-filled soccer experience will give players all the tools they need to become better as they are trained in proper soccer technique. Kindergarten Kickers, ages 5-6 years old (cost $80), will meet 10-11:15 a.m. Students in grades 1-8 (cost $185) will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camps will be directed by Thavisak (Tavi) Mounsithiraj, head coach of the Goshen College men’s soccer team, 2005 MCC Coach of the Year and 2006 NAIA Regional Coach of the Year.

Goshen College President Dr. James E. Brenneman will launch the 2008-09 school year in this opening convocation.
