Local children’s choirs to perform selection of sacred and secular music in May 7 spring concert

GOSHEN, Ind. – Two Community School of the Arts (CSA) children’s choirs will present a spring concert in Sauder Concert Hall in the Goshen College Music Center on Sunday, May 7 at 4 p.m.

 

Shout for Joy, a choir started more than 30 years ago for children from sixth through eighth grade, is presently directed by Diane Schrock Hertzler. Shout for Joy will perform a variety of songs for young voices including “Little Miss Muffet” by H. Hopson, the 17th century carol “While By My Sheep I Watched at Night” arranged by Diane Schrock Hertzler, “Benedictus” by Franz Schubert and arranged by H. Lowe, and the African-American spiritual “Music Down in My Soul” arranged by Moses Hogan.

 

Rejoice! – a choir for children in third through fifth grades that was initiated in the fall of 2004, directed by Dana Lehman – will present “Dona, Dona” arranged by Ruth E. Dwyer, “A Shaker Celebration” by Z. Randall Stroope, “Marienwürmchen” (Ladybug) by Johannes Brahms, “Plenty Good Room” arranged by John Horman and “Cripple Creek” arranged by Emily Crocker.

 

The concert will also include several selections from the upcoming production of the musical HONK!, which will be performed by the Goshen College Music and Theater Department in Umble Center on Sunday, May 14 at 6 p.m.; Monday, May 15 at 7 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 16 at 7 p.m.

 

The choirs will then combine to perform “O Praise the Lord, Who Made All Beauty” by H. Hopson, the African-American spiritualLittle Innocent Lamb” arranged by Ken Berg and “Rhythm of Life” by C. Coleman and arranged by R. Barnes.

 

Tickets for the concert are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and Goshen College students are admitted free with valid ID. Tickets are available at the door prior to the concert.

 

Both children’s choirs offer the opportunity to make music together, develop vocal skills and meet new friends, all in the context of making a “joyful noise to the Lord.”
