May 2006 events at Goshen College

 

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

 

May 3      9 p.m., Campus Worship Night, Newcomer Center Room 19

                        Student-led service of praise and worship.

 

4               10 a.m., Convocation:Jerry and Sis Levin – “Our Lives in the Middle East: Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Israel,” Church-Chapel

                        In 1984, while Jerry Levin was the CNN Mideast Bureau chief in Beirut, Lebanon, he was taken hostage and held for almost a year. He escaped as a result of the sustained efforts of his wife, Sis, to influence his captors. Her book, “Beirut Diary,” tells their story. 
The Levins continue to work in the Middle East – Jerry as a full-time volunteer with Christian Peacemaker Teams in Iraq and Palestine, and Sis as founder of The Children of Abraham, a peace-education project for children.

                        (The Levins will be resource persons for a JustPeace Seminar on May 6 at College Mennonite Church.)

 

                7:30 p.m., New Music Recital, Rieth Recital Hall, Music Center

                        Goshen College student composers will premiere new musical compositions in the fifth annual New Music Recital.

 

5-6            Mennonite Historical Library Centennial Conference: “Future Directions in Anabaptist-Mennonite Scholarship,” Church-Chapel

                        In June of 1906 the Goshen College alumni board created a special set of shelves in the college library devoted to Anabaptist-Mennonite history. One hundred years later, the shelf space has expanded to include 65,000 volumes and is considered one of the most significant collections of its kind. With that in mind, the Mennonite Historical Library is planning a centennial celebration with this conference, including a special banquet and various presentations by Anabaptist-Mennonite scholars.

                NatureFest, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center

                        NatureFest offers hands-on activities, hikes and seminars for people of all ages in a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere. The weekend offers opportunities to explore the outdoors, learn from trained naturalists, glean practical tips for earth-friendly living and spend quality time with family or friends.

                        The featured guest is Karen Lamere of Indianapolis, Ind. – an environmental educator – who will offer a program on reptiles and amphibians and the Native American Ho-chunk (Winnebago) people.

        There will also be opportunities to tour Rieth Village, a brand-new facility built to save energy, prevent water pollution, keep its occupants safe from VOCs and meet the most rigorous standards of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system. Ground source heat pumps, a wind generator, extra insulation, recycled materials, cisterns, rain gardens and solar panels are just a few of the features that make these buildings unique.

7               4 p.m., CSA Children’s Choir Concert, Sauder Concert Hall

                        Two Community School of the Arts children’s choirs will perform their spring concert in Sauder Concert Hall. Performing will be “Rejoice!” directed by Dana Lehman, and “Shout for Joy!” directed by Diane Schrock Hertzler. Tickets, available at the door, are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students. GC students admitted free with ID.

 

9               8 a.m., Afternoon Sabbatical: Bus trip to Meijer Gardens and Ford Museum

                        Nature lovers will be awed by this unique collection of indoor and outdoor scenic gardens at the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Mich. The second stop will be the Ford Museum, which is currently an installation that provides perspective on the tumultuous bell-bottom-and-love-beads 1970s, the critical constitutional crisis of the Watergate years, interactive replicas of the White House’s Oval Office and Cabinet Room and a memory lane glimpse of the “hot spots” around the world that influenced foreign policy.

                        Cost: $45 (Register by April 28).

 

9               9 p.m., Taizé Prayer Service, Newcomer Center Room 19

                        Reflective worship service with songs, Scriptures, silence, prayers and candlelight.

                        Student-led service of praise and worship.

 

14            6 p.m., May Musical: HONK! by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, Umble Center

                        This is a delightful musical based on Hans Christian Andersen’s traditional tale of “The Ugly Duckling.” Ugly, when hatched, makes a strange “honk” sound instead of the expected “quack!” This brings about ridicule and adventure with the surrounding barnyard animals. A mishap sends Ugly out and about resulting in a desperate search to be reunited with his mother, Ida. Overcoming numerous obstacles, including a hungry cat and duck hunters, Ugly not only finds his mother, but his true identity as anything but ugly.

                        The Goshen College theater and music departments will (re)discover the adventures and heart-warming outcome of this hilarious and colorful musical story, directed by Doug Liechty Caskey and Debra Brubaker with choreography by Talashia Keim Yoder. Suitable for all ages. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $6 for students/seniors.

23            7 p.m., Community School of the Arts cello recital: Brook Bennett, Rieth Recital Hall

                        Community School of the Arts (CSA) instructor Brook Bennett will present a recital of music for cello. Tickets are $6 adults, $4 seniors/students available at the door, free for GC students with ID and CSA families.

 

25            7 p.m., Community School of the Arts cello recital: Anna Bauer, Sauder Concert Hall

                        Community School of the Arts (CSA) Piano Program Director Anna Bauer will present a recital of music for solo piano and duo-piano in Sauder Concert Hall. This concert will serve as an end-of-year celebration for CSA piano students, and the public is also warmly invited. Tickets are $6 adults, $4 for seniors and students, available at the door. The concert is free for GC students with ID, and CSA families.

 

May 28-Sept. 10

                Art exhibit: Jaye Bumbaugh – sculpture, drawing and painting, Hershberger Art Gallery

                        Long-time professor of art at Bluffton (Ohio) University Jaye Bumbaugh will exhibit his sculptures, drawings and paintings in this summer exhibit. He taught at the university from 1967 to 2005.

                        A reception for this exhibit will be held on Sept. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m.

 

Goshen College’s Administration Building, Church-Chapel, Good Library, Music Center, Newcomer Center, Union Gymnasium, Umble Center and Westlawn Lounge are accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
