Goshen College announces 2009-2010 Performing Arts Series lineup
GOSHEN, Ind. – The 2009-10 season of the Goshen College Performing Arts Series will again bring top name musicians to the college's Sauder Concert Hall stage, with a group of performers who have amassed a total of more than 30 Grammy Awards.
Next season's performers will include Doc Severinsen and El Ritmo de la Vida; Juilliard String Quartet; The Chieftains; African Children's Choir; Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer; Los Lobos; Peter Schickele; and Ralph Stanley and Clinch Mountain Boys.
The line-up was publicly announced last night, April 14, at the final concert of the 2008-09 season, which featured the Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band. Initial reservations were available immediately following the concert, and season tickets formally go on sale to the public at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 27, at the college's Welcome Center. This year's series packages reflect a 15 percent discount over individually priced tickets.

Doc Severinsen and El Ritmo de la Vida
Grammy winner Doc
Severinsen is well known as the virtuoso trumpeter and bandleader
of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. El Ritmo de la Vida,
Doc's new trio with guitarist Gil Gutierrez and violinist
Pedro Cartas, presents a spectacular concert that features
traditional Spanish music with a jazz flair.

Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 – 7:30 p.m., Sauder Concert Hall
Béla Fleck / Zakir Hussain / Edgar Meyer
Three
Grammy winners and leading virtuosos on their instruments, Fleck,
Hussain and Meyer have recently joined forces, moving with ease
among the worlds of classical, bluegrass and world music. Called
the world's premiere banjo player, Fleck, along with tabla
player Hussain and virtuoso bass player Meyer, have performed their
innovative sounds to critical acclaim.

Los Lobos
Thirty-five years and still going strong, this
Grammy Award winning band has captivated fans around the world. The
band's evolving styles are influenced by traditional Spanish
and Mexican music, rock and roll, R&B, folk and country.
Rolling Stone magazine confirms its relevance: "With
the exception of U2, no other band has stayed on top of its game as
long as Los Lobos."

Four-time Grammy winner Peter Schickele
is internationally recognized as one of the most versatile artists
in the field of music. In addition to composing well over 100
classical works, Schickele is acknowledged as one of the great
satirists of the 20th century in his role as the now classic P.D.Q.
Bach.

Ralph Stanley and Clinch Mountain Boys
Called the
"living patriarch of bluegrass" by the New York
Times, Ralph Stanley is embraced by generations of fans.
Winning a Grammy for his a cappella singing of "O Death"
in the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, 82-year-old
Stanley and his band continue to bring old-time favorites to
enthusiastic crowds wherever they travel.

Juilliard String Quartet
"The Juilliard String
Quartet remains the standard by which all other quartets must be
judged" according to the L.A. Times. Called "a
living American legend," the Grammy winning Juilliard String
Quartet remains fresh in bold interpretation and championing the
new. This season includes amazingly talented new first violinist
Nick Eanet, performing in his inaugural year with the quartet.

The Chieftains
Six-time Grammy winners, The Chieftains are recognized for bringing
Irish music to the world's attention. Through their more than
40 years of performing and entertaining audiences, The Chieftains
have become the best-known Irish band in the world, making
traditional Irish music their own with a style that is both
exhilarating and definitive.

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 – 7:30 p.m., Sauder Concert
Hall
African Children's Choir
Founded in 1984, these young singers are selected from among the
most needy families of Africa to perform throughout the world,
raising awareness of the plight of African children. The choir has
performed at many prestigious events and concert halls, including
on the Tonight Show, at Carnegie Hall, with Bobby McFerrin at Royal
Albert Hall in London and at Nelson Mandela's AIDS awareness
concert in South Africa.

This year's regular series season ticket includes six concerts. Four performances are set for each season ticket: Doc Severinsen and El Ritmo de la Vida, Juilliard String Quartet, The Chieftains and the African Children's Choir. Those buying the basic season ticket package then can choose the additional two performances, one each from these two pairs of contrasting shows: Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer / Los Lobos; Peter Schickele / Ralph Stanley and Clinch Mountain Boys. The six-show ticket prices are again $210 for A section seats (main floor, front sides, front of balcony), $180 for B section seats (main floor back, back sides, raised back and back of balcony) and $115 for seats in the C section seats (upper side balconies). Anyone can also create a seven or eight-show package that includes either or both of the remaining shows at an additional cost.
Season tickets go on sale to the public on Monday, April 27 at 9 a.m. A nonrefundable deposit of $20 per seat will hold season tickets and seat preference. This offer is good through May 8. Full payment is due July 15. Seats will be assigned according to the date received. Individual tickets will go on sale Monday, Aug. 31 at the Welcome Center.

Seating for those with disabilities is available and the minimum age of attendees is 5 years old. And tickets are nonrefundable.
The Goshen College Performing Arts Series debuted on Sept. 21, 1997. Since then, the college has hosted almost 90 concerts by some of the world's greatest performers as part of the program.
