GOSHEN, Ind. – Lavender Jazz, Goshen College’s big band, will perform its final concert of the 2007-08 season on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall. Titled “World Beat,” the concert will include a diversity of styles and cultures in the jazz world, featuring works from Sammy Nestico, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis. Members of the Goshen College Women’s World Music Choir will also perform with Lavender Jazz on one piece.
Lavender Jazz’ classy presentation and energetic music – not to mention those purple ties – has been a crowd-pleaser since its inception in the fall of 2003. The band is directed by Sonny Carreño, in his fifth year of directing Lavender Jazz, who is an adjunct professor in the Goshen College Music Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Texas State University-San Marcos, and taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District and taught English as a Second Language in Texas, Wisconsin and Indiana for 13 years. For more than 35 years, Carreño has performed as a professional percussionist in a wide variety of styles and venues. He is a member of the local Americana band Double Barrel Darrel.
Admission to the concert is $7 general admission, $5 seniors and students. Goshen College students are free. General admission tickets are available at the door only.
