April 2006 events at Goshen College

 

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

 

April 1     7:30 p.m., Spring Orchestra Concert, featuring clarinetist Richard Stoltzman,Sauder Concert Hall

                        Special guest clarinetist Richard Stoltzman will join the Goshen College Orchestra for their Spring Concert, directed by Associate Professor of Music John Graulty.

                        Tickets, available at the door, are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students.

 

2              7:30 p.m., Faculty Recital Series: Solomia Soroka, violin, and Arthur Greene, piano, Rieth Recital Hall

                        Goshen College Assistant Professor of Music Solomia Soroka will present a Faculty Recital Series concert with her husband, University of Michigan Professor of Music Arthur Greene. The program will include pieces by Nikolai Roslavets, Edward MacDowell and Arthur Hartmann, William Bolcom, Eugene Ysaye, Edvard Grieg and Jeno Hubay.

                        Tickets, available at the door, are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students.

 

3              10 a.m., Convocation: C. Henry Smith Peace Lecture by J. Denny Weaver, religion professor at Bluffton University, Church-Chapel

 

6              Art exhibit opening:Senior Show II,Hershberger Art Gallery

                        This exhibition of artwork by graduating senior art majors will run April 6-20. A reception will be held April 9 from 2 to 4 p.m.

 

7               7:30 p.m., Organ Recital: Christine Thögersen, Rieth Recital Hall

                        Christine Thögersen, assistant professor of music, will present a concert of organ music on Opus 41.

                        Tickets, available at the door, are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students.

               

8               1:30 p.m., Dedication of Rieth Village, Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center

                        Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center is expanding its ability to serve college students and has completed phase one of Rieth Village. This cluster of three cottages will house up to 32 students for a semester at a time and provide classroom space for groups studying agroecology, environmental education and natural history. This will also celebrate 40 years of Merry Lea’s history.

                        The schedule for dedication day is as follows:

                1:30-3:15 p.m. – Self-guided tours of the buildings

                3:30 p.m. – Dedication

                4:15-5:15 p.m. – Guided tour of buildings or hike showcasing recent research projects

                        For these events, park at the Farmstead.

 

                7:30 p.m., Spring Choral Concert, Sauder Concert Hall

                        The Goshen College Choirs – Chamber Choir, Chorale, Men’s Chorus and Women’s World Music Choir – will present a spring concert, directed by Debra Brubaker and James Heiks.

                        Tickets, available at the door, are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students.

 

9               2-4 p.m., Art reception: Senior Show II, Hershberger Art Gallery

                This exhibition of artwork by graduating senior art majors will run April 6-20.

 

                4 p.m., Hymn Sing, Rieth Recital Hall

                        This hymn sing will be led by Associate Professor of Music James Heiks.

 

11             12 p.m., Afternoon Sabbatical – International Luncheon, Fellowship Hall of College Mennonite Church

                        “Peru – A Land of Contrasts” will be presented by Associate Professor of Spanish Dean Rhodes and Janette Yoder, director of community programs and adult educational travel. After a traditional Peruvian meal, they will acquaint guests with this very interesting country with bustling Lima, the Amazon Jungle, historical Cuzco, amazing Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the Andean Mountains.

                        Cost: $20, registration deadline March 31.

 

                9 p.m., Taizé Prayer Service, Newcomer Center Room 19

                        Reflective worship service with songs, Scriptures, silence, prayers and candlelight.

 

12             9 p.m., Campus Worship Night, Newcomer Center Room 19

                        Student-led service of praise and worship.

 

17             7:30 p.m., Stabat concert, Sauder Concert Hall

                        Goshen-based men’s a cappella ensemble Stabat, comprised of current and former Goshen College students, as well as community members, will perform a concert of men’s choral music. The group will also commemorate the release of their newest compact disc, which will be for sale for $15 after the concert.

                        Tickets are $6 adults, $4 seniors and students, available at the door.

 

21-23        Graduation Exhibit, Hershberger Art Gallery

                        Combined works by senior art students, on display during Commencement weekend.

 

22             1:30 p.m., Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Church-Chapel

                        A reception will follow this pinning ceremony for the 2006 nursing graduates.

 

23             11 a.m., Baccalaureate Service, Church-Chapel

                        A worship service for 2006 graduates, their families and friends.

 

                3 p.m., 108th Goshen College Commencement with keynote speaker Michael Mata, Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center

 

26            9 p.m., Campus Worship Night, Newcomer Center Room 19

                        Student-led service of praise and worship.

 

30             2-4 p.m., Art exhibit reception: Juried Student Show, Hershberger Art Gallery

                        Selected Goshen College student artwork will be on display through May 17.

 

Goshen College’s Administration Building, Church-Chapel, Good Library, Music Center, Newcomer Center, Union Gymnasium, Umble Center and Westlawn Lounge are accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
