Folk musician Peggy Seeger to offer concert and special live local radio broadcast, April 6-7

Peggy Seeger

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College radio station, 91.1FM The Globe, is sponsoring two local events with folk musician Peggy Seeger, sister of legendary folk musician Pete Seeger, on April 6 and 7.

On Sunday, April 6 at 7 p.m., Seeger will perform in the third floor concert hall at The Old Bag Factory (1100 Chicago Ave., Goshen). Bringing her unique interpretation of traditional folk music blended with some original and contemporary songs, Seeger will energize and inspire the audience through her music, passion for current social issues and insight as a member of America’s most celebrated folk music family. Tickets cost $17 in advance or $20 at the door, and can be purchased by calling the Goshen College Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566.

On Monday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Newcomer Center Room 19 at Goshen College, The Globe is offering a special live broadcast of the show The Folk Revival Era with host Denny McOwen. Peggy Seeger will be on the air to spotlight the life, music and social activism of her brother, Pete Seeger. The broadcast is free and open to the public. It can also be listened to on 91.1FM or on www.globeradio.org.

The first segment of the program will be an educational discussion of his testimony before a sub-committee of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in 1955 during a pivotal post-war period when First Amendment rights and protections were systematically denied to people in entertainment, academia, government and the media who were suspected of having ties to left-leaning politics or organized labor. The second segment of the broadcast will focus on Peggy Seeger, her music, her social activism and her memories of being part of a legendary folk music family.

The Seeger family has been involved in folk music in the United States for nearly a half century. Pete is considered the father of the American folk-revival since 1946. And Peggy’s brother Mike is a virtuoso on several dozen instruments. Peggy’s formal music education was interwoven with her family’s interest in traditional music. She began to play the piano at 7 years old. By the age of 11, she was transcribing music and becoming conversant with counterpoint and harmony. She began to be a songmaker in 1958 and she plays six instruments: piano, guitar, banjo, English concertina and autoharp/Appalachian dulcimer. Peggy has produced 21 solo albums.

91.1 FM The Globe, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is managed by members of the Goshen College Communication Department under the direction of General Manager Jason Samuel. It is one of the college’s significant co-curricular activities, preparing students to become broadcast professionals while providing a service to the Michiana community.
