GOSHEN, Ind. – Lavender Jazz, Goshen College’s “big band,” will present its spring concert “Sky’s the Limit!” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 in Sauder Concert Hall at the Goshen College Music Center. The group will also welcome the Penn (Mishawaka) High School Mighty Kingsmen Jazz Band, directed by Murray Weaver, who will perform on the first part of the program.

The concert will include a diverse program, including pieces by Daniel Barry, Mike Dana, Andy Clark, Don Sebesky, Manhattan Transfer and Marius Nordal. A special vocal trio will join Lavender Jazz, featuring Goshen College music faculty members Beverly Lapp and Debra Brubaker, and Good Library Director Lisa Guedea Carreño.

Lavender Jazz’ classy presentation and energetic music – not to mention those purple ties – became an instant crowd-pleaser since its inception in the fall of 2003. The band is directed by Sonny Carreño, in his third year of directing Lavender Jazz, who is an adjunct professor in the Goshen College Music Department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Texas State University-San Marcos, and taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District and taught English as a Second Language in Texas, Wisconsin and Indiana for 13 years. For nearly 30 years, Carreño has performed as a professional percussionist in a wide variety of styles and venues. Carreño recently joined local Americana group Double Barrel Darrel and has performed with the Anna Montgomery Band and the Tim Hochstetler Trio.

Admission to the concert is $6 general admission, $4 seniors and students. Goshen College students are free. Tickets are available at the door.
