Violin and piano recital to feature Soroka and Hill, March 30

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College Assistant Professor of Music and violinist Solomia Soroka and Associate Professor of Music Matthew Hill, on piano, will present a Faculty Showcase Recital at Goshen College on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Rieth Recital Hall.
The program will feature Mendelssohn’s “Violin Sonata in F Major” (1838), Sir Edward Elgar’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 82” and Béla Bártok’s “Second Rhapsody” (Folk Dances). Hill will also perform Chopin’s “Ballade in G minor, Op. 23.”
Soroka joined the Goshen College music faculty as assistant professor of music in 2004. She teaches applied violin and viola, chamber music, advanced music theory and music literature classes. Soroka, born in L’viv, is among the most accomplished Ukrainian musicians of her generation. She earned her master’s degree summa cum laude and completed postgraduate studies in the Kyiv Conservatory, and later served on its faculty in the department of chamber music. Soroka also has a doctorate from Eastman School of Music. Soroka made her solo debut at age 10 with the L’viv Philharmonic Orchestra, and subsequently has appeared as soloist with that orchestra on numerous occasions. She has appeared as soloist and as chamber musician at concerts and festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, USA and Canada. Soroka has won top prizes in three prestigious international violin competitions held in the former Soviet Union – the Prokofiev, Lysenko and Zolota Osin’ competitions.
Hill teaches piano, music history and humanities. In October 2006 Matthew presented a series of master classes and a recital performance at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China, as well as guest lectures at the Southwest University of Science and Technology in Mianyang. He contributed a chapter to “Silence, Music, Silent Music” (Ashgate 2007), has written for “Clavier” and was an invited presenter at “Couleurs dans le vent: Celebrating the Music of Olivier Messiaen,” an international conference held at the University of Kansas in 2002. Hill is currently co-chair of the music department and co-coordinator of the GC Piano Workshop. He has a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under pianist Howard Karp, and has also studied with the renowned Beethoven interpreter Claude Frank.
Tickets for the recital are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. GC students receive free admission with ID. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.
