Founder
and activist Ray Barnett started the choir when he was called to
help the thousands of orphaned children in Africa. Realizing the
enormity of the task, Barnett decided the only way to make a
difference was to impact the life of one child at a
time.
The African Children's Choir was founded in 1984 as
Barnett's way of raising awareness of the troubles of
African children. The world performing singers are selected from
some of the most needy families throughout the continent.
"Inspired
by the singing of one small boy, we formed the first African
Children's Choir – to show the world that
Africa's most vulnerable children have beauty, dignity and
unlimited ability," said Barnett.
The
choir's message has reached millions of people across North
America, Europe and Australia. Their vibrant singing and
outstanding musical talent has allowed them to raise substantial
amount of money to support the thousands of children in some of
Africa's most needy areas.
On top of performing at Goshen College, the choir has shared their
music at many impressive events and concert halls, including the
Tonight Show, at Carnegie Hall, with Bobby McFerrin at Royal Alber
Hall in London and at Nelson Mandela's AIDS awareness
concert in South Africa.
