March 2011 events at Goshen College

All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

March 6
7:30 p.m., Women's World Music Choir concert, Church-Chapel
Led by Goshen College Professor of Music Deb Brubaker, the 45-voice Women's World Music Choir will perform spiritual music of many cultures, both national and international, particularly indigenous cultures. The worship service program will feature pieces from such countries as Kenya, Hungary, Australia, Spain and Haiti.
Free. Goodwill offering will be taken.

1 p.m., Afternoon Sabbatical: "There are No Free Gifts, and Other Lessons Forgiveness Can Learn from Vengeance," by Joe Liechty and Paul Keim, Sauder Concert Hall
Goshen College Professor of Bible, Religion and Philosophy Paul Keim and Goshen College Professor of Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies Joseph Liechty will be exploring the heart of justice and the art of forgiving. Usually thought of as polar opposites, vengeance and forgiveness turn out to have some surprising things in common.

8 p.m., Faculty Recital: Solomia Soroka and Philip Silver, Rieth Recital Hall
Soroka, violinist, is a Goshen College associate professor of music. Silver, an internationally acclaimed chamber musician, is the pianist of the Rachmaninov Trio.
Cost: $7 adults and $5 seniors and students and free for GC students with ID, available at the door one hour before the concert.

7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Series: The 5 Browns, Sauder Concert Hall
"One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years," the New York post wrote of The 5 Browns. With their five Steinway grands in tow, this youthful quintet of brothers and sisters spectacularly delivers on their dream of "waking up classical music" for their audiences of all ages.

10 a.m., Chapel: "Is There Life After Goshen?: Anticipating New Challenges," Christine and Tom Sine, Church-Chapel
Tom and Christine are part of Mustard Seed Associates, where they are "creating the future one mustard seed at a time."

7:30 p.m., Faculty Recital Series, Rieth Recital Hall
Goshen College Associate Professor of Music and pianist Beverly Lapp will be joined by GC alumnus and harpsichordist Bradley Lehman in a concert of side-by-side works for piano and harpsichord.
Cost: $7 adults/$5 seniors and students and free for GC students with ID. Tickets available at the door one hour before the concert.

A taste of Goshen College life for high school seniors who have already submitted their applications ... stay in the residence hall, meet some of your future classmates, be involved in campus activities. To register for this event call (574) 535-7164 or e-mail admission@goshen.edu.

5 p.m., International Student Club Coffeehouse, Church-Chapel Fellowship Hall/Sauder Concert Hall
This extravaganza features a delicious international meal cooked by the college's international students (with foods from around the world) at 5 p.m. in the Church-Chapel Fellowship Hall, and then a variety show put on by the same students at 7 p.m. in Sauder Concert Hall. This educational and fun event is a fundraiser for the club.
Tickets are available at the Welcome Center by calling (574) 535-7566. The dinner and show cost $17 for adults, $11 for GC students and kids under 12. The program costs $10 for adults, $6 for GC students and kids under 12.

2-4 p.m., Opening reception for Senior Exhibit I, Hershberger Art Gallery
Senior art students exhibit work in a chosen medium. This exhibit runs until March 30.

9 p.m., Taizé worship service, Newcomer Center Room 19
A time of prayer, silence, song and Scripture modeled after the worship of the ecumenical Taizé community in France. All are welcome.

8:15 a.m., Campus Open House, Rieth Recital Hall, Music Center
An overview of Goshen College for high school juniors ... tour the campus, hear about academic and student life, interact with faculty during the information fair. Religion and Science Conference, Church-Chapel Fellowship Hall
At the 11th annual Goshen College Religion and Science Conference the speaker will be Goshen College alumnus Owen Gingerich, professor emeritus of astronomy and of the history of science at Harvard University and a senior astronomer emeritus at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
There are two free public lectures in the Church-Chapel: 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25 and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 26.

7:30 p.m., Earthtones concert, Sauder Concert Hall
Singing music from multiple regions of the world, the Goshen College choirs will again explore the large palette of sounds available to the human voice at the fifth annual Earthtones choral concert. Performing will be the Goshen College Chorale, Chamber Choir, Men's Chorus and Women's World Music Choir. The choirs are directed by Debra Brubaker, professor of music, and Scott Hochstetler, assistant professor of music.
Cost: $7 adults and $5 seniors and students and free for GC students with ID, available at the door one hour before the concert.

7:30 p.m., Ball State University Musical Arts Quintet, Rieth Recital Hall
Cost: $7 adults and $5 seniors and students and free for GC students with ID, available at the door one hour before the concert.
