Back in 1946, Stanley was considering becoming a veterinarian until
his older guitar-playing brother, Carter, was able to convince him
to join him and form the Clinch Mountain Boys. In the last 50
years Stanley has become a renowned American bluegrass
artist, acknowledged for his unique singing and banjo playing.
His style of banjo playing is sometimes referred to as
"Stanley Style" distinguished by incredibly fast
"forward rolls," led by the index finger.
Stanley's style evolved from the Scruggs style.
Called the "living patriarch of bluegrass" by
the
New York Times,
Stanley is embraced by generations of fans. Winning a Grammy for
his a cappella singing of "O Death" in the 2000 film
"O
Brother, Where Art Thou?,"
82-year-old Stanley and his band continue to bring old-time
favorites to enthusiastic crowds wherever they travel.
Group
members include Stanley, Jack Cooke, James Shelton, Steve Sparkman,
Ralph Stanley II, Dewey Brown, Nathan Stanley and E.C.
French.
