GOSHEN, Ind. – Two Goshen College alumni, Sue Hershberger Yoder '91 and Ben Reed '04, will exhibit their artwork in the Goshen College Music Center's Hershberger Gallery from Jan. 15 through March 24. A reception will be held on Sunday, Jan. 17 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and will feature Hershberger Yoder's printmaking and Reed's installations.
Hershberger Yoder teaches in the surface pattern and fashion design programs at Syracuse University's School of Art and Design, where she received a master of fine arts degree. Many of her designs are made for printing on women's apparel, and her prints have appeared in Elle, InStyle, Vogue, Interview and Vanity Fair.
Hershberger Yoder's Midwestern upbringing gave her a visual appreciation of forms found in nature, which she expresses consistently in her preferred medium of printmaking.
"My work attempts to create effects which visually impact
the viewer," Hershberger Yoder said in her artist's
statement. "The familiar forms of the natural world act as a
framework through which to view cultural phenomena."
Reed received a master of fine arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2008, and his work has been shown at MCAD Gallery, Northern Exposure, and Elkhart's Midwest Museum of American Art, as well as other galleries in Michigan, Indiana and Minneapolis.
Reed's artwork consists of large, three-dimensional installations that revolve around the themes of sports and competition. Using wire, figurines, chalk, thumbtacks and various other elements – both prefabricated and homemade – Reed recreates famous sports scenes, freezing moments in time and giving viewers a different perspective on the action.
"You think of how sports are, its one side versus the other," he said in a video interview when his work was being exhibited at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. "[I'm] just using sports as a ... metaphor or an entrance point to ... dealing with society or human interaction in general."
The Hershberger Art Gallery, located in the Music Center, is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The building is accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.
