Pioneer women weave a mosaic of life in Goshen College musical 'Quilters,' May 18-20 May 13, 2008

    The struggles and joys of frontier life for women will come to life at Goshen College with the production of the musical "Quilters" by the college's music and theater departments on the Umble Center stage May 18, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Goshen College mourns with Chinese friends after Sichuan Province earthquake May 13, 2008

    Goshen College is mourning the loss of life and devastation from China's worst earthquake in three decades. The college has sent students to a university in Chengdu, China, for 25 years as part of its Study-Service Term program and was the first U.S. college to arrange an undergraduate exchange with the People's Republic of China in 1980.

Maria Melendez to give poetry reading at Goshen College May 1 April 29, 2008

    Poet Maria Melendez will give a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 in the Yost Room of the Goshen College Umble Center. Melendez's reading will include work from her recent book, "How Long She'll Last in this World," published by the University of Arizona Press. Melendez teaches creative writing and American literature at Utah State University, and formerly taught at St. Mary's College in South Bend, Ind.

Local children's choirs to perform selection of sacred and secular music in May 4 spring concert April 28, 2008

    Two Community School of the Arts (CSA) Children's Choirs will perform their spring concert in the Goshen College Music Center's Sauder Concert Hall on Sunday, May at 4 p.m. Performing are Rejoice!, for grades 3-5 and directed by Rosemary Rupp, and Shout for Joy!, for grades 6-8 and directed by Diane Schrock Hertzler. The choirs will perform individually and together.

    This year, campers who attend the fifth annual NatureFest, held by Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, won't have to worry about cold toes. The date of this weekend adventure in local ecosystems has been moved from the first weekend of May to June 6-7, 2008.

Touring play 'My Name is Rachel Corrie' brings story of young activist in Israel/ Palestine to Goshen April 17, 2008

    Twenty-three-year-old activist Rachel Corrie was an American member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) who traveled to the Gaza strip in Israel/Palestine. She was killed on March 16, 2003, when she tried to stop an Israeli bulldozer in the Palestinian residential area of Rafah. The circumstances of Corrie's death are disputed and sparked controversy. It led to international media coverage, in part because she was an American, and in part because of the highly politicized nature of the conflict itself.

Mennonite first-time voters share views on faith and politics with CNN and Chicago Tribune April 17, 2008

    CNN wanted to speak with Mennonites who are first-time voters this year and learn their views on the presidential election. With the Indiana presidential primary happening on May 6, they decided to visit Goshen College and hear from students about what political issues are important to them, as well as how their Mennonite faith informs their politics.

Merry Lea to offer trip to Ohio's Oak Openings; Registration deadline May 9 April 14, 2008

    Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College is sponsoring an all-day bus trip to the Oak Openings region of northwestern Ohio on Saturday, May 17. The trip is planned to coincide with the peak bloom of the wild lupines and is also a good time to see migrating songbirds.

Student-made documentary on immigration receives a Telly Award April 14, 2008

    A group of Goshen College students produced the documentary "Fuerza" in 2006 about the effects of immigration on the small cities of Goshen, Ind., and Apan, Hidalgo, Mexico. Recently the documentary received a nod of approval from top advertising and production professionals with of a Silver Telly Award for the film.

Goshen College choirs to perform spring concert of music from around the globe April 14, 2008

    A native of Burundi, East Africa, who is an advocate for issues challenging developing countries will present the 110th graduating class of Goshen College with a final address of their undergraduate careers during the 2008 commencement on April 27.

Sweatshop workers from Cambodia and Costa Rica to speak at Goshen College April 6 April 1, 2008

    Phal Savin, from Cambodia, spent many years sewing clothing for Wal- Mart. A mother of five, she was recently fired for trying to form a union, and is now vice president of the Coalition of Cambodia Apparel Workers Democratic Union. Didier Leiton, from Costa Rica, worked for 17 years on pineapple and banana plantations and is now an organizer with the Union of Agricultural and Plantation Workers.

College students to spend First Friday night on courthouse lawn April 1, 2008

    A group of Goshen College students will spend the night of Friday, April 4 in cardboard boxes on the Goshen Courthouse lawn to increase awareness about the realities of homelessness and the need for more affordable housing, and to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County, during the fourth annual Shack City project sponsored by the college's Campus Ministries.

    Lavender Jazz returns to stage for spring world music concert, April 5 April 1, 2008

      Lavender Jazz, Goshen College's big band, will perform its final concert of the 2007-08 season on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center's Sauder Concert Hall. Titled "World Beat," the concert will include a diversity of styles and cultures in the jazz world, featuring works from Sammy Nestico, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis. Members of the Goshen College Women's World Music Choir will also perform with Lavender Jazz on one piece.

      President James E. Brenneman announced Monday that an administrator, researcher and university professor from Oregon has accepted a faculty appointment as project director of the Goshen College Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning.

    Chicago's premier Mexican folk group, Sones de México, to perform in Goshen April 8 March 26, 2008

      Sones de México, a unique ensemble of seasoned Mexican folk musicians and educators that hails from Chicago, will perform at Goshen College in the Music Center's Sauder Concert Hall on Tuesday, April 8 at 8 p.m., following a 7:15 p.m. panel discussion about Mexican folk music. This concert will be free and open to the public, though tickets are required and can be reserved by calling the Goshen College Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566.

      At the eighth annual Goshen College Religion and Science Conference on March 28-30, the keynote speaker will be Holmes Rolston III, regarded as the pioneer of environmental ethics. Rolston will speak on "Generating Life on Earth: Five Looming Questions" on Friday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. and on "Human Uniqueness: Spirited Mind" on Saturday, March 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the Church-Chapel. The lectures are free and open to the public.

    Award-winning poet Marilyn Nelson to give poetry reading at Goshen College April 1 March 25, 2008

      Known for her sensitive and evocative treatments of African-American history and experience as well as her mastery of poetry, Marilyn Nelson will present her work at Goshen College on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center's Rieth Recital Hall as the 37th annual S.A. Yoder Lecturer. The poetry reading is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a reception and book signing.

    Experience the sights, flavors of Cambodia with international luncheon April 15 March 25, 2008

      The international luncheon, which has been an annual part of Goshen College Afternoon Sabbaticals, will introduce Cambodia this year. On Tuesday, April 15, at noon in the College Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall, Professor of Bible, Religion and Philosophy Keith Graber Miller and his spouse Ann, a self-employed design consultant, will present a nation rich with history, a unique culture and smiling faces.     Gossip and truth the focus of Goshen College spring mainstage, March 28- April 6 March 20, 2008

      Do any of us ever have a complete knowledge of the truth? This is the focus of the Goshen College Theater Department's spring mainstage play "Absolutely! {perhaps}," by Luigo Pirandello and adapted by Martin Sherman. Christianity Today announced its 2008 Book Awards today and “Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy” (Jossey-Bass, A Wiley Imprint, Sept. 2007) received an award of merit in the “Christianity and culture” category.

      Carol Becker, an art critic and dean of faculty at Columbia University in New York’s School of the Arts, will be at Goshen College Thursday, March 13 to speak on "Educating Creative Practitioners for the 21st Century" at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center's Rieth Recital Hall, as a Yoder Public Affairs lecturer. The event, free and open to the public, will include a question and answer time, and will be followed by a reception.

    Maple Leaf defends national title in racewalk March 11, 2008

      Continuing the recent surge of championships by the Goshen College Women's Track and Field Team, sophomore Tina Peters defended her 2007 title with another historic win March 6-8 at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.

    Center for Healing and Hope receives local nursing honor society gift March 11, 2008

      Chapter officers Brenda Srof and Vicky Kirkton from the Nu Omicron Chapter At Large, member of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, presented a gift of $500 to the Center for Healing and Hope of Goshen. The gift, presented March 4, was the second year that the chapter has been committed to community outreach through providing a gift to a community health agency. Kirkton is the director of the Goshen College Department of Nursing and Srof is professor of nursing at Goshen College and president of the local chapter.

    Goshen College seniors showcase artistic endeavors in capstone exhibit, March 9- April 27 March 10, 2008

      Eleven Goshen College art majors will display the results of their studies and work in the annual Senior Art Exhibitions in the Goshen College Hershberger Art Gallery between March 9 and April 27. Pieces from both exhibits will be included in a Senior Commencement Exhibit April 24-27.

    Civil Rights activist Ruby Sales to speak on faith and activism March 12 and 14 March 10, 2008

      As an African-American who grew up in Alabama during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, Ruby Sales participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. And then her life was changed in an instant when she was threatened by a man named Tom Coleman with a gun. Her fellow marcher, white seminarian Jonathan Daniels, pushed her out of the way and was instantly killed by the bullet. Despite death threats, she testified at the trial of Coleman, who was acquitted by a jury of 12 white men. The outcome of the trial though led to reform of the segregated procedures that were used to pick juries in Alabama.

    Shirley Sprunger King to present Goshen College organ recital March 16 March 10, 2008

      Shirley Sprunger King will perform in the 2007-2008 Organ Recital Series at Goshen College on Sunday, March 16 at 4 p.m. in Rieth Recital Hall. King's recital will be highlighted by the world premiere of Mennonite composer and 1979 Goshen College alumnus H. Brent Weaver's "Soliloquy on a Gospel Hymn," a work that was commissioned by King for this concert. The work is based on F.M. Lehman's "The Love of God," a favorite hymn of the composer's.

    President Brenneman says Middle East trip may prompt new educational exchanges March 7, 2008

      Goshen College President James E. Brenneman called for greater dialogue and exchanges between Christians and Muslims as he concluded a trip in which he led Goshen College board members and supporters to Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

    Loud sounds Friday: Goshen College to evaluate a campus warning system March 5, 2008

      Sirens and loud voices will ring out across Goshen College and into some nearby neighborhoods on Friday, March 7, but it won't be an emergency. As part of a study of improved emergency communication, the college will be evaluating a campus warning system.

    Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers organization, to speak March 10 March 3, 2008

      Prior to the organizing work Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez did as the co-founders of the United Farm Workers organization, farm laborers in this country were primarily anonymous and seen as expendable. Huerta continues to speak out on justice issues and is coming to Goshen College on Monday, March 10 to address the issues of immigration and human rights, at the invitation of the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning at Goshen College.

    Lecture to focus on public speaking and performing, March 5 February 29, 2008

      The 2008 Roy H. Umble Master Class in Communication and Theater at Goshen College will feature Shoshana Simons, an associate professor in the Transformative Leadership and Studies program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and Nika Quirk, a doctoral student in the same program, talking about "Bringing Voice and Body into the Academy" on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Umble Center. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow.

    Library Gallery to display heirlooms from Mennonite and Amish families, March 3- Aug. 15 February 29, 2008

      Until the mid-20th century, Mennonite and Amish groups in North America produced little fine art, but much folk art. Though much has been sold off to the highest bidder over the years, many items have stayed in families and been passed on through generations as heirlooms.

    Students spring into customized shoe and apparel business February 28, 2008

      A shift in trends led two Goshen College senior business majors toward custom shoe and apparel design business that culminated in the conception of Springer Design, Inc. Mark Springer and Tyler Springer were recently awarded an entrepreneurship grant of $5,000 to help get their customizing shoe business kicking as a result of their innovative idea.

    Basketball players named to All- Conference Teams February 27, 2008

      Two members of the Goshen College Men's Basketball team and two members of the Women's Basketball team were selected to the All Mid- Central College Conference Teams, as announced by league officials this weekend.

    John D. Roth says Christian denominations will not disappear February 25, 2008

      John D. Roth, a Goshen College professor of history and director of the Mennonite Historical Library, says that Christian denominations continue to have great relevance despite evidence of declining membership and eroding loyalty to traditional institutions. Contrary to claims that nondenominational churches represent the most authentic form of Christianity, Roth argued that Christian faith will always be expressed in specific doctrines and visible institutions.

    Alumnus artist, Ingrid Hess, display celebrates heritage and bookmaking with exhibit February 25, 2008

      Children's book illustrator and cut paper artist Ingrid Hess, a 1990 Goshen College alumna, has returned to campus to display her recent work which is heavily influenced by her roots. An exhibit of her mixed media art opened earlier in February and will be on display until March 6 in the Goshen College Music Center's Hershberger Art Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

    First SST group in Tanzania for semester February 22, 2008

      President George W. Bush has recently received a warm welcome in Tanzania, as have 20 Goshen College students. For the first time, during this spring semester, Tanzania is the location for the college's study abroad program, Study-Service Term (SST).

    Softball season won't take place in 2008 February 21, 2008

      After careful deliberation, the decision has been made to not field a Goshen College softball team for the 2008 spring season, which had been scheduled to begin March 13. Interim Athletic Director Doug Yoder said the decision was made because of a shortage of student-athletes. As of Feb. 13, the team had eight student- athletes, including one injured player; a minimum of nine players are required to start softball games.

    Local youngsters to tap sugar bush, enjoy sticky-sweet syrup at Merry Lea February 20, 2008

      Some 1,400 elementary students from 29 area schools and home school groups along with their parents and teachers will find environmental learning to be sugary-sweet at Sugar Bush 2008, sponsored by the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College. This day-long, hands-on experience in maple syrup making takes place at the Yoder Sugar Bush near Huntertown, Ind.

    Women's basketball game on Feb. 20 to be broadcast live on the Web February 19, 2008

      The Goshen College Athletic Department, along with the Communication and Information Technology Services-Media Departments and WGCS-91.1 FM The Globe, has announced that the women's basketball game on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. will be available live in real video via a free Internet Web cast. The women's broadcast follows a successful showing of the men's basketball team's 79-71 win over Taylor University Saturday afternoon.

    Women's World Music Choir to perform concerts on first tour February 18, 2008

      Four years after forming, the 57-voice Goshen College Women's World Music Choir is touring for the first time, sharing spiritual music from many cultures at churches and schools in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York City during its 2008 spring break tour, Feb. 21-March 2, as well as performing a concluding home concert in Goshen.

      "You have set the bar high for the rest of the state of Indiana," remarked Mac Williams, chair of the Indiana Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) as he unveiled a glass plaque announcing Indiana’s first platinum- rated LEED building on Monday, Feb. 11.

    President announces Provost's retirement and new V.P. for Enrollment Management February 8, 2008

      Goshen College President James E. Brenneman announced Friday that John D. Yordy, the college's provost and former interim president, will retire June 30. Brenneman also announced that Executive Director of Enrollment Lynn Jackson has been promoted to the new position of vice president for enrollment management and that the president will supervise campus vice presidents starting next month under a new leadership structure.

    Winner of 2008 peace speech contest focuses on ending child labor February 8, 2008

      The community and college convened on Feb. 5 to hear speeches by five Goshen College students on subjects concerning principles of peace in the 2008 C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest.

      They both grew up in Elkhart County just miles apart, were star athletes on competing junior high and high school teams, and graduated from Goshen College the same year.       At her exhibit opening in the New York City gallery Margaret Thatcher Projects, Jayne Holsinger's worlds collided. Many of the Lancaster County Mennonites in her paintings were on hand and "having them near their portraits created a spectacle," Holsinger said. "New Yorkers were thoroughly delighted by this unusual treat. It was special." And the show also was favorably received with good press coverage, sales, interest and feedback.

      A group of adults of mixed ages knelt around a heap of dirt dug from a pit two foot deep in a former farm field. They examined the heavy clay soil, squeezing fistfuls to see if it would form clumps in their hands. Earlier, they had paced the length of several parcels of land: the square footage needed to feed one person a subsistence diet, a vegetarian diet and a typical American diet for one year.

      A year ago, on the first Monday in October 2006, a horrific shooting at an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., became news around the world. "Very quickly the media story shifted from one of lost innocence to one of bewilderment and even consternation," said Goshen College Professor of History Steve Nolt, during a campus lecture on Oct. 1. "The victimized Amish community were reacting in very strange ways. … While other neighbors said they hoped [the killer] was enjoying burning in hell, the Amish said they trusted he had met a merciful God."

      Merry Lea's green building outperforms energy projections February 28, 2007

        Somewhere in Appalachia, there is a big pile of extra coal: about 3.5 tons, or enough to fill five pick-up trucks. That’s how much coal Rieth Village, a biological field station owned and operated by Merry Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, didn’t use in the past six months. The five-plus tons of carbon dioxide that are not in the atmosphere are harder to visualize but also important in light of mounting concerns over global warming.

        Last fall the first and second place winners of Goshen College's Peace Play Contest were performed. The college's Winter One Acts productions on Feb. 2 to 4 will include three other new submissions to that competition, which made the "short list."         Goshen College offers weeklong study abroad to Mexico for nontraditional students January 10, 2007
