Date and time: Sunday, March 24, 2-4 p.m.
Location: Goshen College Union Building
Cost: Free and open to the public

Goshen residents will have an opportunity to explore renovated spaces at Goshen College, experience a live broadcast of 91.1 The Globe and win prizes, including an iPad mini, during a community fair and open house on Sunday, March 24 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Visitors can explore the newly renovated Union Building space, which includes a new Welcome Center, the recently established Center for Intercultural and International Education, and 91.1 The Globe’s revamped radio station. The family friendly event will also feature student musicians and performers, face painting, student and faculty artwork and complimentary food.

Guests will also have the chance to register for a number of giveaways in addition to an iPad mini, such as Performing Arts Series tickets, a college cabin rental, passes to the college’s Recreation-Fitness Center, a Music Together class for children, student artwork and tickets for upcoming student musical and theater performances.

Goshen College’s student-run, award-winning radio station, 91.1 The Globe, will broadcast live from the lobby of the Union building, and guests will have the opportunity to meet the DJs and experience the radio station in operation. The Globe was just awarded “Best College Radio Station in the Nation” for the second time in three years by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System, and was named “Radio School of the Year” in Indiana for the last two years by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters.

In 2012, the Union Building underwent a renovation that transformed the west half of the old gym into new office spaces, a conference room, reception area and renovated bathrooms. The project was funded by the Lilly Endowment, which in 2006 granted $12.5 million to Goshen College to establish the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning (CITL), now known as the Center for Intercultural and International Education (CIIE). CIIE encompasses what was once the Multicultural Affairs Office, CITL, and the International Education and Study-Service Term (SST) programs.

“Although the emphasis is on the remodeled spaces in the Union Building, we really hope this event will attract folks who are not familiar with Goshen College or just curious to know more about this community asset,” said Jim Caskey, vice president for institutional advancement at Goshen College.

Ted & Co., led by Ted Swartz, are dynamic actors and musicians who are passionate about bringing thought-provoking storytelling to the stage. The group incorporates theater and comedy into biblical storytelling, often pushing the envelope on issues of faith and social justice.

Ted & Co. will present three evening shows at 7 p.m. on Feb. 8-10. Tickets for the evening shows cost $5 for individual tickets or $10 for the whole family. Wednesday night’s show will be in Goshen College’s Umble Center; Thursday night’s show will be in Goshen College’s Church-Chapel; and Friday night’s show will be at The Goshen Theater (216 S. Main St.).

Tickets will be available to purchase through the Goshen College Welcome Center. Call (574) 535-7566 or email welcomecenter@goshen.edu.
Wednesday night’s show in the Umble Center, titled “The Big Story,” combines Scripture, story and humor. Both theater and seminary trained, Swartz has found a unique and entertaining discovery; at the intersection of humor and biblical story is often a greater understanding of the text. In this show, Ted brings biblical characters to life in unexpected and entertaining ways.

For Thursday night’s performance in the Church-Chapel, Swartz will present “Laughter and Lament.” In this show,

Swartz offers audiences a glimpse into his 20-year friendship and creative partnership with Lee Eshleman, which ended when Eshleman took his own life in 2007. Swartz explores the paradox of working with a comedic partner struggling with bipolar disorder, as well as the challenge of writing and performing God’s stories while experiencing the absence of God after Eshleman’s death. Using monologue and multi-media, “Laughter and Lament” reveals the unique journey of working in the theater and church under the shadow of a mental illness, and offers hope and humor. Also on Thursday, Feb. 9, Swartz will lead a church workshop, “Incorporating Drama in Worship,” at 9:30 a.m. in the Koinonia Room in Goshen College’s Church-Chapel. This event is free and open to pastors and worship leaders. Call (574) 535-7565 or email churchrelations@goshen.edu to reserve a place.

Friday night’s performance at The Goshen Theater, titled “I’d Like to Buy an Enemy,” will be a hilarious and poignant satire that explores peace, justice and the American way. This thought-provoking show allows us to laugh at ourselves while engaging us to think about the place of the United States in the world. It confronts the fear that is such a large part of U.S. culture and considers ways to work for peace and justice in this country and in the world.

Swartz graduated from seminary in 1992, and began a ministry that took him not to a pulpit in a congregation, but to audiences across the United States and beyond. The first 20 years of this work included the creation of Ted & Lee TheaterWorks with Lee Eshleman, and development of plays such as Armadillo Shorts, Fish-Eyes, Creation Chronicles, Live at Jacob’s Ladder and DoveTale.

Since Eshleman’s death in May 2007, Swartz has been writing and performing new plays with a number of other artists. Swartz lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

GOSHEN, Ind. – It’s not often that Goshen College students have the opportunity to pick the brain of a close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But that’s exactly what happened during a convocation on Monday, Jan. 16, when senior Yolo Lopez-Perez sat down with Dr. Vincent Harding to ask him questions about race, multiculturalism, identity and servant leadership.

Harding stressed the idea that the work of the civil rights movement is ongoing, and that each person has the ability to help. “You now have a freedom to be engaged with each other in ways that may make it possible to create a better Goshen College, city, maybe even Elkhart, but maybe even America,” he said. “I am asking you all to be free to see that you are citizens of a country that we must still be creating. A country where all of us are welcome, where all of us are deep participants, where all of us can sing and move and meet each other, where the oldest among us will always know that they are cared for and the youngest among us will always know that they will be nurtured.”

When it comes to balancing an organization’s need for cohesion while welcoming diversity, Harding said it is important to be open to the natural changes and developments that come along. “Identity is not something that is most valuable to us when we are grasping it, and saying ‘Don’t lose it!’” said Harding. “Identity is most helpful and useful to us when we’re saying, ‘How can we join what we have with what others have.’”

Students gathered to talk with Harding after the convocation.

Harding used a caterpillar as a metaphor for what could happen if we hold on too tightly to our identities. “If the caterpillar said, ‘I’m going to be a caterpillar, that’s all!’ it loses its chance to fly,” he said.

When asked about servant leadership, one of the college’s core values that is being emphasized this school year, Harding pointed to the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Before King became a civil rights leader, a group of women in Montgomery, Ala., began taking radical actions to protest against discrimination, including Rosa Parks. But the group of women needed a spokesperson, said Harding, so they called on King and he became their servant.

“[King] didn’t come galloping into Montgomery on a steed saying ‘I am your leader,’” said Harding. “The people knew the kind of leader they needed, and King listened to them.

Harding also spoke of the importance of standing in solidarity with the poor, the underprivileged and the discriminated against, a cause to which King literally gave his life.

Part of being a servant leader, said Harding, is taking Jesus seriously. “I don’t see any way of taking Jesus seriously without standing with the poor, without being available to anyone who’s in trouble, without always looking around for where are the outcasts and the weak, and going to stand by their side.”

Harding ended the time by encouraging students and the campus community to be in open conversation with one another, and to live into the freedom of the great variety that the campus has and to take full advantage of it.

The Parables worship team also performed during the convocation.

Harding was a close friend of Dr. King, at one point living around the corner from him in Atlanta when he and his wife, Rosemarie (a ’55 GC alumna), directed a Mennonite Voluntary Service unit, from1961 to 1964. Harding drafted the “Beyond Vietnam” speech that King delivered at Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, and in 1968, Harding became the first director of the King Memorial Center in Atlanta.

The convocation also featured performances by the Parables worship team, and was among the various activities the college offered for its annual Martin Luther King Study Day. Other activities throughout the day, which focused on the theme “Hope, History and Change,” included a spoken word coffeehouse, a community conversation about race, a community luncheon, and a candlelight vigil and march for peace and justice.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Irish poet Peter Fallon will offer a poetry reading in Goshen College’s Newcomer Center Room 19 on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. A reception will follow the reading, during which books will be available for purchase and signing. The event is free and open to the public.

Fallon’s most recent collections of poetry include “The Company of Horses” (2007) and his acclaimed translation of Virgil’s “Georgics” (2004). He is also the author of “News of the World: New and Selected Poems” (1998). With Derek Mahon, he edited “The Penguin Book of Contemporary Irish Poetry” (1990).

Fallon has a personal connection with Goshen College, as he has both served as the S. A. Yoder lecturer and hosted numerous groups of Goshen College students at his home in County Meath who participated in the Ireland literature and peace course taught by Emeritus Professor John Fisher.

Fallon was born in Germany in 1951 and grew up on his uncle’s farm in County Meath, Ireland. He is an Honors Graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, where he was Writer Fellow in 1994. When he was 18, he founded The Gallery Press, which has since published more than 400 books of poems and plays. The Gallery Press is recognized as Ireland’s pre-eminent literary publishing house and has published writers such as Seamus Heaney, Ciaran Carson and Brian Friel.

Fallon’s collections of poems include “The Speaking Stones” (1978), “Winter Work” (1983), “The News and Weather” (1987), “Eye to Eye” (1982) and “The Deerfield Series: Strength of Heart” (1997). In 1993, he received the O’Shaughnessy Poetry Award from the Irish American Cultural Institute.

“Delighting in the landscape and its creatures, Fallon writes with understanding and compassion about the superstitions and misfortunes that affect a small community,” wrote Poetry International. “Fallon’s poetry has a deceptive simplicity and accessibility even as it affirms the values of endurance, survival and communal life.”

Fallon has been a poet in residence at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and a professor of Irish studies at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, where he received an honorary doctorate. He currently lives with his family in County Meath.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Mary Catherine Levri, organist and assistant director at the University of Notre Dame Basilica of the Sacred Heart, will present a recital of organ music on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. in Goshen College Music Center’s Rieth Recital Hall. Levri will present a recital of music from the 16th through 20th centuries by Bruhns, Weckman, Brahms, Frescobaldi, Bach and more.

Levri graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2006 with a degree in the program of liberal studies and organ performance. She also graduated from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family with a master’s in theological studies. In 2011, she received a master’s of sacred music from Notre Dame. She played two degree recitals in March and December 2010 on the Fritts organ at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

Levri is now the assistant director of the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir and an assistant organist at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus at Notre Dame. She has previously served as organist and choir director in parishes in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

The Rieth Recital Hall organ, designed by Taylor and Boody, is based upon 18th century North German organ-building principles. It features more than 1,600 pipes, and a case of carved solid white oak. The temperament, Bach-Lehman, is a hypothetical reconstruction of Johann Sebastian Bach’s preferred system and was re-discovered by GC alumnus Dr. Bradley Lehman Ô86 in 2004 and published in the February and May 2005 issues of Early Music. This instrument was the first organ since the 18th century to employ this tuning in its construction. The organ was dedicated in a series of concerts and events May 1 through May 8, 2005.

During the convocation, the candidates will specifically focus on what they hope to accomplish as mayor in the context of servant leadership, one of Goshen College’s core values and the convocation theme for this year.

In the evening, the Yoder Public Affairs Lecture Committee will sponsor a mayoral candidates forum. Each candidate will speak on his vision for the city of Goshen as mayor, followed by a question period (involving a time for questions from the audience), moderated by Vince Turner, vice president and regional manager of Mutual Bank in Goshen.

Del Good, chair of the Yoder Public Affairs Lecture Committee, said, “The Frank and Betty Jo Yoder Public Affairs Lecture series was established to give the Goshen community the opportunity to hear persons of interest and expertise on current issues of broad interest. It seemed important to help provide a forum for the community to hear from our mayoral candidates on the issues facing our local community.”

The Frank and Betty Jo Yoder Public Affairs Lecture Series is an endowed lectureship, created for Goshen College in 1978 by Frank (1917-1996) and Betty Jo Yoder of Goshen with the goal of enabling faculty, students and community to hear well known speakers address current issues. Each year, experts from a wide variety of fields and vocations visit campus. Speakers have included Frances Moore Lappe, Ralph Nader, Juan Williams and Bill McKibben.
