This year’s exhibit includes over 30 artists and over 50 works of art in a variety of media, including drawing, jewelry, printmaking, sculpture, painting, photography and ceramics.
This is the third year a themed student exhibit has been held, with previous themes being: “Tolerance & the Other” and “North & South.” Professor of Art Randy Horst said, “Themes are selected that reflect the shared values of the Goshen College community. We try to pick themes that can be interpreted in a wide variety of approaches.” The Goshen College Art Department and Art Club are co-sponsoring the exhibit.

Born in Japan, artist Michiko Itatani lives and works in Chicago as a professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the Goshen College Art Department’s 2012 Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist and will offer a public lecture, “Cosmic Wanderlust,” in the Administration Building Room 28 on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m., with a reception following in the Music Center’s Hershberger Art Gallery. The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 7 to Jan. 13, 2013. The presentation and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Itatani’s process of art-making starts with gathering various fragments from experiences, events, documents, literature, history, science, myths and customs. These fragments are then cataloged and mutated to make images. It is an act of fusing research, observation, memory and imagination. Her exhibit features small scale, beautifully painted views of Baroque interiors with cosmic elements.

In Itatani’s lecture and exhibit, she will explore “the human desire to reach out into the mental and physical space beyond our grasp,” she writes. “Through this process, I am trying to come to terms with the complex reality of the 21st century. And my vision stays pathetically optimistic.”

Itatani has been a Professor of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1979. Her solo exhibitions include: University of Wyoming Art Museum; Tokoha Museum, Japan; Chicago Cultural Center; Musee du Quebec, Canada; Alternative Museum, NY. Her work has appeared in Art in America, Art on Paper, Artnews, Artforum, Dialogue and Artweek. Her work has been collected internationally, including in the: Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; University of Western Ontario, Canada; Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona; Olympic Museum, Switzerland; Villa-Haiss-Museum, Germany; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. Her awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA Fellowship and Illinois Arts Council Fellowship.

Itatani is the 26th Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist Program speaker (view a list of past speakers). The program honors the late Eric Yake Kenagy, who was a gifted ceramics student at Goshen College from 1984 until his death in 1986.

He continued on to Bowling Green State University for a master’s degree and Arizona State University for a master of fine arts degree before teaching at Hesston (Kan.) College for 20 years.
Young adults from local high schools and Goshen College are combining art with social justice to share their perspectives in a new exhibit in the Goshen College Good Library Gallery, titled “Photovoice: Student Perspectives on Iterculturalism, Diversity and Educational Access.” The exhibit will show in the Good Library Gallery from Sunday, Sept. 16 until Friday, Nov. 6, with an opening reception on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

A collection of photographs and accompanying narratives, the exhibit allows participants to utilize photography and creative writing to voice their perspectives and share their stories.
The show is sponsored by the Goshen College Center for Intercultural and International Education and the Theater Department. The Good Library Gallery, located on the lower level of the Harold and Wilma Good Library on the campus of Goshen College, is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 3 to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
GOSHEN, Ind. — This summer, the Hershberger Art Gallery at Goshen College will host an exhibit by members of the Indiana Women’s Caucus for Art (IWCA) called “Four Decades of Women in Art.” The IWCA presents the show in honor and celebration of the 40th anniversary of their national organization, the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA).

The exhibit will open on June 10 and remain on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery throughout the summer. All are welcome to a closing reception and lecture by several IWCA members on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.

A group of multidisciplinary and multicultural artists and participants, the WCA is a nongovernmental organization founded in 1972 with dreams of creating community through art, education and social activism. Local chapters throughout the country serve to support this mission to represent female artists and to advocate for equity in the arts for all.

Begun in South Bend in 1978, the IWCA works to bring the goals of the WCA to artists and communities in Indiana. With a mission to expand opportunities and recognition for women in the arts, the IWCA has provided ongoing support for members, including local and regional exhibits such as this one, as well as workshops, conferences and activities. The IWCA is proud to share the contributions of women in art with local communities. This anniversary exhibit will feature work by most of the IWCA current members, as well as invited former members who were instrumental in the early years of the organization and are now based in other areas: Moira Marti Geoffrion of Arizona, Carol Ann Carter of Kansas, and Gwen Diehn of North Carolina. The show will include work from a wide variety of mediums and approaches, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, book making, fibers and photography.

The Hershberger Art Gallery, located in the Music Center, is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when the college is not in session during the summer. For confirmation of hours, call the Goshen College Music Center at (574) 535-7361. The building is accessible to people using wheelchairs and others with physical limitations.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College Professor Emeritus of Art Abner Hershberger has his 11×26-foot art installation, “Culture Clash” on view at ArtPrize, an international exhibition in Grand Rapids, Mich., from Sept. 21 to Oct. 6. His work is located at DeVos Place Grand Gallery (303 Monroe Ave. NW).

Viewers can vote award favorites by cell phone after on-location registration. Last year 400,000 people representing 22 countries voted. Awards totaling $450,000 were given last year, plus some curatorial awards.

Hershberger is one of 1,582 artists accepted this year. Every artist must be accepted by a venue located in a four-block downtown area. ArtPrize is a unique art competition because of open-voting for awards being done by the public, rather than by art specialists. His art work, mural-like in scale and composition, was installed last week by using a utility lift because of its location 14 feet above floor level.

The uniqueness of the ArtPrize program inspired Hershberger to reflect on the two styles of art he has used. Each style has been shown separately in the past due to museum and gallery specifications. The open criteria of ArtPrize allowed him to combine the two styles in one art work, or installation. This permitted him to express the concept of his two significant communities. The nonabstract “Heritage Works” represent his Mennonite community and the abstract expressionist works represent the art community.

GOSHEN, Ind. – They may be fictional ancestors, but the women portrayed in Chicago artist Preston Jackson’s bronze sculpture exhibit, “Fresh from Julieanne’s Garden,” tell powerful stories of their lives during the eras of slavery, emancipation, Reconstruction and since.

The exhibit will be on display in Goshen College’s Good Library Gallery beginning on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and through Black History Month, from Jan. 15 to March 2. There will be an artist reception on Sunday, Feb. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit will include 14 bronze castings and two-dimensional portraits of majestic heroines of the U.S. South from the 17th through the early 20th centuries, each with an accompanying personal narrative that draws from historical research and family memoirs.

“They embody the collective soul of black women who met the tribulations of slavery and sexism with stoic resolve and, at times, armed resistance,” said a review in the Chicago Sun-Times. “They paid for their heroism with their lives, and sometimes with their sanity, but never with their dignity.”

Jackson, a professor of sculpture and head of the figurative area at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, seeks to preserve cultural history and explains attitudes in the African American community in this collection. In an artist statement, he stated that his intent isn’t necessarily to reflect bitterness or hostility, but to illustrate the resolution and resiliency of these women and to evoke admiration for the strength they had in the face of hardship.

Jackson has earned degrees at Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He splits his time between Chicago and Peoria, where he owns the Raven Gallery, home of the Contemporary Art Center. In 1998, Jackson was awarded the Order of Lincoln Medallion, Illinois’s highest honor for individual accomplishments.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs Office, the Plowshares Grant, and the Harold and Wilma Good Library.

The Library Gallery, located on the lower level of the Wilma and Harold Good Library on the campus of Goshen College, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.
