Working with the media

Media relations is a part of the college’s Public Relations department, which seeks out positive stories about Goshen College and works to publicize them through the media, increasing Goshen’s visibility. To do this, we:
  • Distribute information and stories about GC to media outlets (newspapers, magazines, radio, television and Internet).
  • Cultivate relationships with reporters and media outlets. We work also at connecting reporters with faculty experts on campus. Want to know what to do when a reporter calls? Look here.
  • Monitor news to find the right fit for stories we place and locate stories about GC.
  • Provide photography services for the Public Relations office and to accompany press releases, including coverage of newsworthy campus events.
  • Write content for and maintain GC’s news Web site.
What makes news?
A story must be timely or say something new about a topic that has been covered before, and must be somewhat unique in order to catch an editor’s eye or ear. It must be relevant to the lives of their readers, viewers or listeners.

If you have an idea for a Goshen-related story that might be of interest to the news media, contact the Public Relations office. We will evaluate the story idea and pitch it to the appropriate news outlets. However, whether a story appears in the news ultimately depends on the decision of the editor or producer of that media outlet.

How to help us get the word out:
  • Share your story ideas. We look to the campus to be our eyes and ears, and to bring us story ideas we might otherwise miss. We are looking for compelling research, high-profile public service, can't miss events and simply good stories about faculty, staff, alumni and students. Please don’t assume that we know about your news and events. Be sure to inform us so that we can inform others. Contact Jodi Beyeler at with your ideas or fill out this event press release form and print it off or email it to inform us about an event you are planning.
  • If you have an informed faculty opinion, let's get it out there. Faculty members make wonderful commentators, and they provide great opportunities to raise the visibility of GC. Consider composing Op-Ed pieces on current affairs and newsworthy topics - opinion pieces, letters to the editor, commentaries and guest columns. We can help plan them and get them placed. Call us with your ideas.
  • Work with us well in advance. To get the best publicity, we try to send press releases out at least two weeks in advance of an event. We would like to have information at least three weeks before an event. We recognize that some events are planned at the spur of the moment. In those cases, we will do our best to get information out, but short notice does put a strain on our schedules and makes it less likely that a newspaper will run the story.
  • Always give us as much information as possible. It is easier for us to edit down information than to try to fill in a story.
  • We cannot guarantee media coverage. Our press releases let reporters and editors know about activities on the GC campus, but, of course, they are no guarantee that a reporter will show up. We will work hard to make that happen. If a reporter does attend, he/she will want to observe the activity (perhaps even videotape or photograph it), do interviews, get background info and more.
  • We do not charge media to come to GC events. Our informal policy is to never charge media for attendance at GC events.
Depending upon the news item, we distribute information through our Web site, e-mail, fax, U.S. mail, etc. Following are some tools we use for publicizing the college, on-campus and off:
  • Press releases. Our office sends out news releases announcing on-campus events, highlighting student, faculty and staff accomplishment and announcing developments and changes at the college. Ideas for press releases come from a variety of sources, and we are always looking for ideas. Sign up to receive a weekly email news digest of all the press releases we send out.
  • Calendars. “Next Month” is Goshen’s monthly public events calendar. We distribute events once a month (around the middle of each month) to selected media sources, Goshen community contacts and on-campus constituents.
  • Website. The Goshen College web homepage, www.goshen.edu, and the News & Events page have recent press release listings, upcoming events and recent GC in the News links.
  • Bulletin . This quarterly alumni magazine offers features about the college and alumni.
