Orchestra The
Goshen College Orchestra is a group that varies in size and repertoire
from that of chamber orchestra to full philharmonic dimensions. Formed
in the 1950s, it has actively performed standard symphonic repertoire
ever since. The group presents concerts of major orchestral works each
semester. In addition, it accompanies the choirs, operas and student winners
of the Concerto-Aria Competition.

John Graulty, DirectorDr. John Graulty, the newly appointed music director of the Goshen College Orchestra & Wind Ensemble, has held faculty positions in instrumental music at Butler University and the University of Indianapolis. Prior to accepting appointments in higher education, he conducted professional ensembles throughout the United States and Europe in such venues as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and the Red Army Theater in Moscow.He has served as both a conducting and clarinet clinician at the Latvian Music Academy in Riga, and as a guest of the Ministry of Education in Singapore. His clarinet and conducting performances have been broadcast on television and radio (NPR) in this country and abroad, most recently on WTBU-TV in Indianapolis and on Latvian National Radio. He hosted a weekend conducting workshop at Goshen College on February 14-15, 2004, with guest artist Mariusz Smolij, Music Director of the Wroclaw Philharmonic in Poland and recent resident conductor of the Houston Symphony. In addition to his conducting duties at Goshen, John teaches music theory, conducting, and aesthetics. He also remains active as a clarinet instructor and performer. He will host “Clarinet Summit 2004” in June at Goshen College with virtuoso Richard Stoltzman, master teacher Kalmen Opperman, and klezmer clarinetist and scholar Dr. Joel Rubin from Cornell University. His past Clarinet Summits have attracted advanced students from across the US, Japan, Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Poland, and Latvia. In July, 2004, he will serve as special guest clarinet lecturer and conductor/chamber music coach at the VI International Music Camp for Young Latvian Musicians in Ogre, Latvia. John, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was educated at the Peabody Conservatory, New England Conservatory, and Columbia University. He resides in Goshen with his wife Susan and their four daughters: Valerie, Stephanie, Natalie, and Michelle. |
