Fall Concert Press Release

Goshen College Campus, Sauder Concert Hall, November 12, 2005

Lavender Jazz, Goshen College's Big Band with guest trumpeter Danny Barber, present "Face the Glory!", a diverse program of Big Band Jazz repertoire including works from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Gordon Goodwin, and other jazz greats at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12, in Sauder Concert Hall at the Goshen College Music Center.

Also on the bill are Goshen High School's Crimson Jazz I and Crimson Jazz II. This marks Crimson Jazz' first appearance on the Goshen College campus and is only the second time the jazz ensembles from Goshen College and Goshen High School have performed together.

Lavender Jazz' classy presentation and energetic music -- not to mention those purple ties -- became an instant crowd-pleaser since its inception in the fall of 2003. Carreño said, "I'm going out on a limb to say this is our best band yet. With Danny Barber and GHS Crimson Jazz I and II, we've put together the most incredible jazz event Goshen College and the city of Goshen have ever seen!"

Guest artist Barber will be featured on a number of selections. Barber is known throughout the music industry for his in-depth sound, his power and musicality, and his ability to utilize all registers of the trumpet. He has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Band and Maynard Ferguson. Barber's playing credentials as a freelance trumpeter include: recording dates and performances with the Chicago, St. Louis, and Utah symphony orchestras and numerous radio and television commercials; several Broadway shows including "Les Miserables" and "Phantom of the Opera;" and recordings with CBS Records, Styx, Chicago City Lights Orchestra, Brass Band of Battle Creek, and the Buddy Childers Big Band. Barber can also be heard on four of arranger/composer Frank Mantooth's albums and on the sound track from the movie "A League of Their Own." His jazz and pop appearances included performances with some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Nancy Wilson, Kenny Rogers, Doc Severinsen, Natalie Cole, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, Anthony Quinn, Henry Mancini, Joel Grey, Ann Margaret, Tommy Tune and Louie Bellson.

Admission to the concert is $5 general admission, $3 seniors and students. Goshen College students are free. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the Welcome Center at (574) 535-7566.
